Sath-Chith-Ananda

"Sath-Chith-Ananda" is manifest in man as supreme bliss - the bliss Divine.  This bliss is present in man as his spiritual essence.  Man has no need to go after trivial pleasures when he has this eternal bliss within himself. He will experience this bliss when he gets rid of the attachment to the body worn out of delusion and ignorance."

Horsley Hills

Years ago, Baba stayed for a few days at Horsley Hills, which is 3,800 ft. above sea level.  Twice a day He would take us to some beauty spot where we could peacefully learn from Him spiritual matters.

Our little camp situated as it was amid the hills was inaccessible except by jeep; so our food and water for drinking had to be hauled up by the villagers from the small hamlet at the foot of the hills; for other purposes a buffalo at the bungalow helped to transport water from a well, in skin bags slung across its back!

This quiet sylvan beauty was enjoyed by all and we were privileged to share it with Baba.  Then came the day when we had to break camp and return.  Baba proposed that we walk down together.  He suggested that we try and see who could run down the fastest!

Baba interrupted, saying, "Wait, I will be back in a minute" and he went into the garden.  Some of us quietly followed Him and found Him taking leave of the buffalo!  He patted it affectionately saying, "You have done Me good service, Bangaroo," (a term of great affection, meaning Gold).

Watch

"When you keep a watch on your words, actions, thoughts, character and heart, then this becomes your real watch, not the one you tie on your wrist.  The wristwatch may wear out but not the ideals indicated by the word "watch".  They will always bring purity of thought, word and deed.  How great is this word!  Such noble words must be ingested and internalised.  In this way, our ancients taught sacred truths and made the people ideal and noble.  But today this idealism is nowhere to be seen."

The Victory of Virtue

King Ambarisha performed a Yaga, but at the crucial moment, the animal intended for the sacrifice escaped. Now the priests ordained that to make amends for this sinful neglect, a human being should be offered as a substitute to the Gods.

The King promised 1,000 cows in exchange for a son, but which father will send a son to death, even when 1,000 cows are given in exchange?

There were also other conditions: the King’s messengers should not ask anyone for the son. They should not commit the sin of equating 1,000 cows as equal to a human being. The father too should not break the sad offer to the son. The offer to immolate himself must come unasked from the son, without any prompting or persuasion. It is only such a son that will be accepted by the Gods.

Now, Sunasshepa heard the news by himself and approaching his father, he said he would go, and gladly too. For, what greater good fortune can a mortal expect than ascending to heaven through the sacrificial flame?

Sunasshepa persuaded his father that his wish to proceed to the Yajna and offer himself was legitimate and approvable, and left for the capital. On the way, he went to his maternal uncle, Viswamitra, who tried to prevent the boy from going to the sacrifice.

“This is all just foolish superstition. Can any one substitute a man for a cow?” Viswamitra asked. Sunasshepa replied that all men are cattle, for until Viveka and Vairagya (wisdom and renunciation) dawn, they are but animals. So, in spite of his uncle’s arguments, arguments like the ones used by some to dissuade persons from coming to Puttaparthi, Sunasshepa managed to reach the Yagasala.

In the same way as the lights before us are lit when a switch is moved up at Penukonda (which is 40 kms from Puttaparthi), when the Lord decides on something, it has to happen so. Well, the Lord is not a rock or a stone. His Heart melted at the plight of the boy. Indra appeared in the sacrificial fire and departed showering blessings on his head.

It was Indra who had carried away the original cow and elaborated this entire plot, to bring Sunasshepa and his greatness to light and to bless him.

God Speaks

 The man whispered,
"God, speak to me"
and a meadowlark sang.

But, the man did not hear . . .

So the man yelled,
"God, speak to me"
and the thunder rolled across the sky.

But, the man did not listen . . .

The man looked around and said,
"God let me see you."
And a star shone brightly.

But the man did not see . . .

And, the man shouted,
"God show me a miracle."
And a life was born.

But, the man did not notice . . .

So, the man cried out in despair,
"Touch me God, and let me know you are here."
Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man.

But, the man brushed the butterfly away...and walked on . . .

I found this to be a great reminder
that God is always around us in the little
and simple things that we take for granted . . .
even in our electronic age, . . .
so I would like to add one more:

The man cried, "God, I need your help!"
And an e-mail arrived reaching out
with good news and encouragement.

But, the man deleted it and continued crying . . .
Don't miss out on a blessing
because it isn't packaged the way that you expect.

Divine Wisdom

"This world is His play; it is not an empty dream; it has purpose and use.  It is the means by which one can discover God, see Him in the beauty, the grandeur, the order, the majesty of nature.  These are but shadows of His glory and His splendour."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~
(Voice of the Avatar - Pt.1)

Celestial Poems of Sathya Sai Baba

"O man!  Do not pride over your beauty or youth.
Do not take pride over your power of senses.
You are very soon going to enjoy the state of old age.
See the comedy - you cannot move, you suffer from cataract.
Your skin becomes wrinkled and your hair turns white.
Even the children will tease you by calling you an old monkey."

Baba's Storytime - Cultivate Pure Love

Extracted from Bhagawan's Divine Discourse at Prasanthi Nilayam on 19.2.2004.

"Once Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was walking through a market place, chanting the Divine Name.  In fact, he was dancing in ecstasy.  On seeing him, some people thought he was a madcap.  They snatched away his Mridanga but he did not resent this.

He started chanting the Divine Name to the rhythm of the cymbals.  The irate onlookers took away the cymbals also.  Even then he was not bothered.  He thought perhaps God did not like the rhythm of his cymbals.  He resolved not to touch the cymbals again.  He thought that whatever musical instruments were taken away from him were not to God's liking.

God's will prevails ultimately.  Such was his faith.  From then onwards, he gave up all worldly attachment and concentrated on Prema Tattwa (principle of love), which none could take away from him.

One has to aspire for that which cannot be taken away by others.  That is pure love.  A printed matter on a piece of paper cannot be separated from it.  Likewise, your heart should be like a pure white paper and love, the printed matter.  These two are inseparable.  Cultivate such love."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

Love Everyone

"Love everyone.  But do not trust everyone without discrimination.  One who puts his trust wholly in others is headed for ruin.  Love all, Serve all.  But put trust in yourself.  Develop self-confidence.  Give up worldly desires.  Develop divine feelings and give up worldly feelings.  This is the Dharma (righteous path) of humanity."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~
(Divine Discourse - 6.5.2002)

We Must ...

We must be silent before we can listen.
We must listen before we can learn.
We must learn before we can prepare.
We must prepare before we can serve.
We must serve before we can lead.

God's Love

"All that is associated with time is bound to disappear one day or the other.  You have to attach yourself to that which is permanent, eternal and real.  God's love is beyond all description.  It is supreme.  On the other hand, physical love is momentary and is associated with physical relationship.  Whatever is associated with the body comes and goes.  But pure and selfless love which emerges from the heart comes and grows."

"My benediction is "May all be happy". Everyone should adhere to the path of righteousness. All should manifest their spiritual essence and experience spiritual bliss. Swami Holds the Universe

"Swami holds the universe in His hand.  But devotees learn of the glory and majesty through Swami's attention to each one personally.  That Swami holds the universe, yet at the same time fully cares for the lives of His devotees even to the smallest details, is a measure of His glory that the devotee can understand.  In the case of a devotee who has pure thoughts and a pure heart, and who has surrendered to Bhagawan, then Swami takes full responsibility for that life and takes care of that devotee.  But where a person has a big ego, relying on ego desire and not on Bhagawan, then Swami keeps a distance and does not interfere."

All I Desire from You

"Embodiments of love!
I do not expect anything from you.  Only develop love within you.  Regard all mankind with fraternal feelings.  Recognise all as the children of God.  Bear no ill-will or hatred towards anyone.  Do not hurt anyone's feelings.  Only such a large-hearted attitude will confer on you limitless bliss.  If you are celebrating Swami's birthday, this is all I desire from you.  Have unity among yourselves.  Strive to revive and promote the glory of Bharat."

Divine Wisdom

"Banks have vaults where customers can deposit their valuables, silver, gold and jewels.  They surrender them to the custody of the bank and dismiss anxiety from the mind.  The spiritual bank also has such a facility.  Surrender your jewels of intelligence, cleverness, capacity to serve and the gem that you value most, your ego, to the care of God.  Then you will be happy."

Celestial Poems of Sathya Sai Baba

What does he take at the time of death?
Where will he go?  Where will the wealth go?
Listen, O brave son of Bharath!"

Baba's Love for His Devotees

Baba's love for His devotees is expressed in many ways.

Once at Dharmakshetra, there was a gathering of teachers of the Bal Vikas in Sathya deep.  After the meeting commenced, the Bhajan party from below the Hill was also invited to join.  Hurrying up the steep incline, many were short of breath, but one elderly lady seemed to suffer a great deal.  Baba made her sit down learning against the wall, under a fan.  Then He disappeared for a moment, only to reappear with a glass of water which He give the lady to drink.

He cannot tolerate any one standing in the sun waiting for Darshan and is bothered when, due to rain, devotees are drenched.  During the hot summer months, Baba allows the Prayer Hall at the Nilayam to be used by old or sick women to sleep in.  It is Love that prompts Him to distribute sweets to each individual Himself, though there be thousands present, and to eat very simple food, so that even the poorest person may offer Him hospitality.

Ladies Day 2014

"This day of 19th November is celebrated as Ladies Day in order to delve into the sacred qualities of women and disseminate them. Women are the repositories of Truth and Culture. Though earth is one, the plants vary depending on the seeds sown. The womb of mother symbolizes Mother Earth. As is the seed of thought sown in it, so is the fruit it yields. You cannot expect mangoes by sowing a neem seed. So, the mother should be filled with good thoughts, good words and good deeds. Only then can her children be virtuous."

My Wish for You

This is my wish for you:
Comfort on difficult days,
smiles when sadness intrudes,
rainbows to follow the clouds,
laughter to kiss your lips,
sunsets to warm your heart,
hugs when spirits sag,
beauty for your eyes to see,
friendships to brighten your being,
faith so that you can believe,
confidence for when you doubt,
courage to know yourself,
patience to accept the truth,
Love to complete your life.

What is Real Wealth?

Once there was a rich and powerful king who wanted to invade and conquer a neighboring country. While passing over a snow-covered mountain with his army, the king met a holy man who had no clothes. The king thought the poor fellow must be cold, so he tried to give the holy man his grand and expensive cloak.

The holy man had grown wise from his many years of prayer and meditation. He said to the king, "The Lord has always taken care of my every need. Oh king. Give the cloak to someone who is poor - not to me." The holy man went on to say very sweetly to the king, "If you are so unhappy with all your riches that you must conquer another kingdom, and cause your soldiers to risk their lives, then keep the cloak. You are a poor man; you need it more than I do."

The king was wise enough to understand the teaching the holy man was giving him. The king realized how poor and empty his life was. He asked the holy man for the secret to his peace and happiness.

The holy man answered, "I am happy because I have no desires; without desires you are the master of everything."

Then and there, the king called off the war and took his army home. The citizens of his country welcomed him as a hero, for the king indeed had conquered and won a great victory. He no longer had any desires!

Grace of God

"If you must bring the power from the power-house to your residence to illumine your place, you have to put up poles at regular intervals and connect the house with the power-house with cables.  So too, if you must win the Grace of God, do Sadhana at regular timings and connect yourself with God by the cable of Smarana (remembering the Lord)."

Beautiful You

This world is full of beautiful people, but you would never know it by asking them. In my life I have seen countless beautiful faces, smiles, eyes, hair, laughs, personalities, bodies, and souls, yet I have never seen one person who admitted to how beautiful they were.

I have heard people talk about how old, ugly, fat, grey, wrinkled, out of shape, dumb, and lazy they were. If I asked any of them to admit to their own beauty, even to the beauty of their hearts and souls, however, all I would get was their denials.

Why is it seen as perfectly acceptable to constantly put ourselves down, but the height of arrogance to admit to our own beauty, goodness, and worth? There is a wonderful saying that goes, "God doesn’t make junk." Since we are all wonderful Children of God, we shouldn’t put down God’s work with these "junk" labels. God didn’t put us here to be ugly, stupid, or worthless. God put us here to be beautiful, wise, and loving. Let’s stop being our own worse critics then and start living up to God’s view of us.

The next time you look in the mirror then see who is really there. Look at the light in the eyes ,the joy in the smile, the happiness in the laugh, and the love in the soul. Look at the true beauty that is you. Notice that glorious Child of God who is staring back at you from the looking glass.

That is who you really are. You are not your extra pounds, grey hair, wrinkles, uneven teeth, bald head, or even dumb mistakes. You are instead that bright, beautiful, and glowing love and joy that is within. Don’t ever confuse the soul inside of you with the body that carries it around.

Take my word for it. You are beautiful. You are wonderful. You are special. Now go out and share that beautiful, glorious, loving, and joyous person you are with the world.

Women are Great!

"Women are great because they show the right path to man.  They are in fact, the light of wisdom in the world.  They, therefore, deserve protection and reverence.  Sita symbolizes Jnana Tattwa (principle of wisdom).  Sita told Rama that goodness was universal, irrespective of caste, creed and community.  It is because of women like Sita that men have made progress in life."

Prayers Must Emanate from the Heart

Listen to what happened to sage Ramadas of Bhadrachalam, the singer who was imprisoned by the Nawab of Golconda, for misappropriation of public funds (to renovate the Rama temple at Bhadrachalam), whose liberation from jail was effected by Rama and Lakshmana themselves paying the Nawab the sum appropriated!

Ramadas had piled up a large mass of palmyra leaves on each of which he had written with his stylo a song on Rama.  When his eyes fell on the heap one day, a thought struck him: "Did I compose these songs for my pleasure?  Or for pleasing Rama?"  He wanted to know those songs which had pleased Rama and fling away those which did not.  He decided to throw the whole bundle into the Godavari river and let Rama save those which He approved.

Almost the whole lot sank to the depths, only 108 floated and were rescued.  They alone had arisen from the heart; the rest smacked of cleverness, artificiality, punditry, pedantry.

Prayers must emanate from the heart, where God resides and not from the head, where doctrines and doubts clash.

Let All The Worlds Be Happy

God's Will

I know not by what methods rare,
But this I know:
God answers prayer.

I know not if the blessing
Sought will come in just
The guise I thought.

I leave my prayer to Him alone
Whose will is wiser than my own.

Divine Wisdom

"Develop love for God.  Don't give up your devotion to God even if others ridicule you on that account.  Don't lose faith in Him when you are in difficulties.  Consider everything - pain and pleasure, loss and gain, joy and sorrow - as God's Prasad - divine gift or grace.  Don't forget to chant His Name under any circumstances.  God's Name is the only reliable boat to ferry you across the river of life."

Celestial Poems of Sathya Sai Baba

"Religions are different, but the path is one
Clothes are different but thread is one
Ornaments are different but gold is one
Colours of the cows are different but milk is one
Beings are different but breath is one
Castes are many but birth is one
Doctrines are many but Divinity is one
Flowers are different but worship is one
Unaware of this knowledge, people go astray
And pursue many a path to eke out their living
What more can I tell you, oh virtuous men of this assembly?"
