Divine Wisdom

"Devotion means friendship with God.  It means establishing close relations with God through love.  Service to God is the essence of devotion.  Hence sage Narada declared "Hrishikesa Sevanam Bhakthiruchyathe" (Service to Hrishikesa is called devotion).  When devotion is developed in this manner, Karuna (compassion) arises spontaneously.  When compassion grows, man experiences Divine bliss, free from ill-will or attachment towards anyone."

Grace

"To secure the grace of the Divine, it is not necessary to seek knowledge, wealth, power and position.  Purity of mind alone is enough.  Every cell of one's body will be filled with the Divine when God is worshipped with pure and single-minded devotion."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

Instant Alchemy

A group of 60 Americans, educators, anthropologists and other professionals, most of them ladies, studying the ancient mysteries of the East, with Jean Houston, an eminent American scholar of ancient cultures, came on an all India tour to experience the rich culture of Bharat and its ancient wisdom. A visit to Prasanthi Nilayam to have the Darshan of Sai Baba was on the itinerary and they arrived on January 13th.

At 3.30 in the afternoon I was walking out of Sai Sadan on my way to the canteen and I was greeted by two members of the group whom I had met in America, last summer. They asked for directions and I soon became involved with a few other hastily recruited residents of the Ashram, in arranging for the comforts of these 60 souls.

Now, they learned that the Darshan had been cancelled. It started to rain, first in an intermittent drizzle and then in a steady fall.

"Can't we follow where Sai Baba went? We will go any place for just one distant look at Him."
So they all drove to the Stadium, where a volleyball game was in progress with the Brindavan team pitted against the Prasanthi Nilayam team. Swami's grace allowed us and the 60 to be in His presence for about 20 minutes.

Moving this large body of people quickly took a long time. When the bus unloaded again in Prasanthi Nilayam, we discovered that Swami had arrived 20 minutes earlier. Luckily almost the whole group got seats in choice positions, directly across the temple. No better seats could have been obtained. The Divine Director provided for all.

Swami walked out of the Mandir heading for the flower encircled lotus and suddenly walked straight to where the ladies of the group were seated. He made some Vibhuti for Dr. Houston, the group leader, and another. He also materialized rock candy for a member and took a few letters from some people in the group. Moving several steps along the Darshan line He materialized Vibhuti and rock candy for three other members of the group.

At this point, I offered Swami a handkerchief to wipe His Vibhuti filled hands. He called me out of the Darshan line to come close to Him to bring the kerchief, which He then used to wipe His fingers. Swami uses us as His instruments to serve Him by serving others, and in the process He fills us with His sweet Love and Bliss. Swami tossed the handkerchief back to me. I returned to my seat. A member of the group, sitting directly behind me, asked to touch the kerchief, which she did with deep reverence. I told her she could keep it. Instantly, tears started streaming down her face. It seems that in Vancouver, Canada, this woman had a very dear friend, who had fallen ill with polio. The patient had made one request of her friend, that if she had a chance to visit Sai Baba on her trip to India, would she please try to bring back something that Baba had touched, something that she could wear on her person. Every tiny detail of Swami's activity is part of His Divine Play.

After bhajans, the professors (as Swami referred to them) were taken by bus to the Lecture Hall. People who had received Vibhuti shared it with others. Supreme happiness was felt by all, even the gents in the group whom Swami had not approached. When the group settled down, Sri Drucker answered questions and gave a brief talk about the Path to God involving Service, Devotion and Wisdom. The joyous group of 60 professors boarded the bus for their return journey to Bangalore, and on to Delhi, the next morning.

In five hours, Swami performed what turned out to be a major transformation, in His incomparably loving way.

Fill Me, Lord

Fill me with the fruits of Your Spirit, Lord.

Fill me with love, so that I seek to understand and appreciate the rich variety and diversity of life that surrounds me.

Fill me with joy, so that I celebrate Your presence in each and every moment I am on this earth.

Fill me with peace, so that I know how to ease those angry and sometimes violent urges that well up inside of me.

Fill me with patience, so that I stop rushing long enough to witness Your miraculous work taking place all around me (and within me!)

Fill me with kindness, so that I take the extra time to help the one in need, even when it isn't convenient for me.

Fill me with faithfulness, so that I place my mind, heart and all that I do in the service of Your Will.

Fill me with gentleness, so that others know that I believe in a God who loves and cares for all people.

Fill me with self-control, so that I act not on my impulses and urges, but rather on my beliefs and values, which are rooted in You.

Fill me with these fruits of Your spirit, Lord!

The Goal of Dasara

"The goal of celebrating the Dasara festival is to control the ten senses.

Legend says that Goddess Chamundi killed the demon Mahisha during this occasion. The inner meaning of this story is that, under no circumstances, associate yourselves with demonic qualities. Always be in good company. If you join bad company, you will also become evil.

Hence, never befriend a bad person. The moment you come across such people, just say ‘goodbye’ and move on. You need not develop hatred towards them. Whomever you come across, consider them as embodiments of Divinity and salute them. Even when you come across people who hate you, offer your salutations (pranams) to them and ask them, “How are you brother?” Then they too will respond in the same manner.

A human being is one who is endowed with human values and also exhibits them. Always speak truth and observe righteousness (Dharma). Be peaceful. Be happy and blissful."

A Pure Heart is the Abode of God

"God's grace cannot be had by one who is wavering from moment to moment and whose heart is not pure.  The Lord judges the devotee by the purity of his heart and not by the kind of worship or Japa he performs.  Even if you do not practise worship or meditation, it is enough if you have cleansed your heart.  The Divine will then enter it."

The Supreme Shakti

“The life of a man who cannot respect and love one’s mother is utterly useless. Recognizing one's mother as the very embodiment of all divine forces, one must show reverence to her and treat her with love. This is the true message that this nine-night festival (the Navaratri) gives us.

The supreme Shakti manifests herself in the form of Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Durga grants us energy - physical, mental, and spiritual. Lakshmi bestows on us all forms of wealth - not just money but intellectual wealth, the wealth of character, and others. Even health is a kind of wealth. She grants untold riches to us. And Saraswati bestows intelligence, the capacity for intellectual inquiry, and the power of discrimination on us. The Navaratri festival is celebrated in order to proclaim the power of the goddesses to the world.

One's own mother is the combination of all these divine beings. She provides us with energy, wealth, and intelligence. She constantly desires our advancement in life. So she represents all the three goddesses that we worship during the Navaratri festival.”

Mother of the Universe

Mother Sai, the Mother of the universe!
Thou art the embodiment of Energy (Durga),
Wealth (Lakshmi) and Knowledge or Wisdom (Saraswati),
Mother Sai, the Mother of the universe!
Protect me!

Celestial Poems of Sathya Sai Baba

"The name of Lord Rama is sweeter than sugar,
It is tastier than the essence of curds,
Sweeter indeed than the honey from the beehive,
As you go on chanting,
It will turn out to be as pure as nectar,
Hence, remember Rama's name with all your heart."

Overcoming Karma

Once when the sage Narada was proceeding to Vaikuntha, the heavenly abode of the Lord, he espied a yogi (renunciant) who was engaged in severe ascetic practices.

The yogi prayed to Narada to bring back from Vaikuntha information about the date of his becoming entitled to enter into the Lord’s abode. Narada promised to do so.

When Narada stood in the presence of God, he pleaded on behalf of the yogi and asked that he may be informed of the date.

The Lord replied, "Tell him that he will be coming here after as many more births as there are leaves on the tree under which he is currently doing penance."

Narada felt sad and dispirited when he thought of the grief into which the yogi would be thrown into on hearing this disheartening verdict of the Lord. But he mustered courage to announce it nevertheless, for the yogi insisted on learning the news that he had assured to bring.

When Narada at last broke the demoralizing decision of the Lord, contrary to his expectations, the yogi was transported into a realm of joy; he was not dispirited in the least.

He jumped and danced in glee. He was lost in the thrill of his dream being so near actual fulfillment. He became oblivious to the world around and was filled with ecstasy thinking of the Lord and offering Him his profound gratitude.

The Lord was so pleased with the joy of the yogi that He himself appeared before him and offered him Vaikuntha immediately. But, the yogi said, he would bide his time, for he did not like the Lord's word, which Narada had brought, to be falsified!

The Lord now had to convince him that good deeds, noble thoughts and sacred feelings can wipe out the tracings of bad; therefore, by his enthusiastic acceptance of the Lord's will,
he has actually overcome the consequences of past actions.

The Law of Karma is not an iron law; by dedication and purification, which invites Divine benediction, its effects can be modified, and its rigour mitigated. Do not despair; do not lose heart. When vices hold sway over your heart it becomes foul and sooty; the flames of kaama, krodha and lobha (desire, anger and greed) char the heart. What quenches these flames is the Grace of the Lord. Grace confers bliss (anandam), which the evil tendencies (kama, krodha and lobha) can never confer.

Baba's Storytime - Mira's Non-dual Love for Krishna

Extracted from Bhagavan's Divine Discourse of 13th April 2005.

"Names and forms appear to be different but the reality behind all these is one and the same.  However, people are unable to look deep within themselves and experience this oneness.  The power of love is unparalleled.  There is no power greater than this.  Love cannot be understood by experiments and investigations.  It can be understood only through love and nothing else.

Mira's husband, Rana could not tolerate her singing in the Mandir all the time.  He commanded her to go out of the Mandir.  This came as a great shock to Mira.  She thought to herself, "Is Krishna inside the Mandir and not outside?  When Krishna is present everywhere, how can Rana take me away from Him?"

After understanding this reality, she left her home and set out for Mathura.  Mathura is not merely the name of a town.  In fact, the heart suffused with Madhura Bhava (sweetness) is Mathura.  She sang, Chalo Re Man Ganga Yamuna Teer, Ganga Yamuna Nirmal Pani Sheetal Hota Sarir (Oh mind!  Go to the banks of the Ganga and Yamuna; the water of Ganga and Yamua is pure; it will make the body cool and serene).

Here Ganga and Yamuna symbolically man Ida and Pingala (left and right subtle channels in the spine).  The centre of the eyebrows where Ida and Pingala meet stands for Mathura.  This is the real meaning of the  song.  But people these days do not enquire into the inner meaning of these truths.  They are carried away by the worldly meanings and interpretations.  Do not go by these interpretations.  The feelings of one's heart are most important.  They are true, steady, changeless and eternal.

Mira proceeded towards Mathura chanting the Name of Krishna incessantly, crossing rivers, hills, dales and forests and ultimately reached Brindavan.  Her husband, Rana repented for having ill-treated Mira and came there.  He prayed to her for forgiveness.  After some time she went to Dwaraka but she found the temple doors closed.  In spite of her repeated prayers, the doors did not open.  Then she said, "Oh Krishna, you don the crown of peacock feathers and the yellow robe.  Make my heart Your temple.  Dwell in the  altar of my heart."  She banged her head against the temple door, calling for Krishna.  Krishna manifested there and she merged in Him.

Mira installed Krishna in her heart.  In this way, Mira experienced her oneness with Krishna through her non-dual love for Him."

God

In the ancient days, when the first quiver of speech came to my lips, I ascended the holy mountain and spoke unto God, saying, 'Master, I am thy slave. Thy hidden will is my law and I shall obey thee for ever more.'

But God made no answer, and like a mighty tempest passed away.

And after a thousand years I ascended the holy mountain and again spoke unto God, saying, 'Creator, I am thy creation. Out of clay hast thou fashioned me and to thee I owe mine all.'

And God made no answer, but like a thousand swift wings passed away.

And after a thousand years I climbed the holy mountain and spoke unto God again, saying, 'Father, I am thy son. In pity and love thou hast given me birth, and through love and worship I shall inherit thy kingdom.'

And God made no answer, and like the mist that veils the distant hills he passed away.

And after a thousand years I climbed the sacred mountain and again spoke unto God, saying, 'My God, my aim and my fulfilment; I am thy yesterday and thou art my tomorrow. I am thy root in the earth and thou art my flower in the sky, and together we grow before the face of the sun.'

Then God leaned over me, and in my ears whispered words of sweetness, and even as the sea that enfoldeth a brook that runneth down to her, he enfolded me.

And when I descended to the valleys and the plains, God was there also.

"Is This For Me?"

"When I am with a child, I am a child. . ." How delightfully true!

In 1978 a large group of children from a center in England visited Brindavan, taking with them seven sacks of 'presents' for Swami (to be given to the needy.) And what a collection it was! Apart from all the garments, the children had given the things they liked best - teddy bears, toy trains, cars,
toys, even clothes-pegs, and a packet of Weetabix breakfast cereal!

And is this for me, too? Swami kept saying in wonder, as he took out, examined, and played with each item to the children's delight.

Then he took them to see His little animal friends in the Brindavan garden, sitting a small rabbit on his crown of hair for their amusement; and then on to fondle the calves, for at that time the Gokulam was situated behind the former residence. (Meantime several important personages who had come to see Him were forced to curb their impatience!)

The first night the children were far too excited to sleep, so Baba visited their quarters and asked them if they would go to sleep if He went to sleep? There was a chorus of assent. So the Avatar lay down on the floor, pretending to sleep, till all were in blissful slumber, when He was able to creep out on tiptoe.

Everything is Temporary

"All of us should consider our body as only an instrument to discharge our duties.  Never think that this body is permanent and you have to accumulate wealth to maintain it.  It is merely a waste of time and effort when you try to accumulate worldly possessions.  Everything else is temporary except love and truth."

Divine Wisdom

Always Live in Bliss

"Always live in bliss.  If difficulties confront you, drive them away.  In fact, suffering and troubles have no real existence.  Then why are you worrying?  Develop the attitude of detachment.  Then you will have no suffering and no worry.  Remind yourself, "I am a human being.  These difficulties and suffering do not belong to me."

If you develop real body detachment, you will not be affected by any affliction.  Physical ailments like stomach ache, headache or body pain are natural to the body.  Why should you worry about that which is natural?  You suffer because you develop too much attachment to the body.

However, you have to take care of the body to the extent that you are not dependent on others.  You should realise your true nature.  Regulate your diet and habits.  Since you have too many desires, you have all the problems.  If you eat too much, you will have to suffer from indigestion.  Hence, control your craving for food.  Eat moderately and maintain good health.  That is what I advise the children always:

Get up early in the morning at the crowing of the cock,
Have a bath after your morning ablutions,
Wear a proper dress,
Eat properly and moderately,
Go to school and study diligently.
Earn a good name.

(Telugu Poem)

Develop good health, cultivate good habits, have good conduct and earn a good name.  If you have all these, you will not need anything else in life.  Do not run after medicines and doctors for your small problems.  If a medicine cures one disease, it will create another.  Many doctors have made the medical profession also a business.

What are you going to achieve if you lead a life full of worries?  Nothing at all!  Some doctors may exaggerate even your minor ailments as cancer and ulcer.  In such cases, even if you do not have such a disease, worry caused to you by the imaginary disease may lead to it.  The more you worry about it, the more would be your suffering.  Therefore, do not worry about your small physical problems.  If you lead a life of moderation and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you don't need to be at the mercy of doctors."

Celestial Poems of Sathya Sai Baba

"Do not be proud that you have learned much,
Do not be arrogant that you are rich,
Do not be proud that you are father of many sons,
Do not be arrogant that you are a generous one,
Do not be inflated that you have a job,
Do not show off that you are valorous,
Do not be proud that you are efficient at work,
Do not be arrogant that you are a capable one.
If you conduct yourself endearingly to one and all,
You will become dear to the Lord Himself.
What else can I tell you,
O! Virtuous members of this assembly!"

To Believe ...

To believe is to know that every day
is a new beginning.
It is to trust that miracles happen,
and dreams really do come true.

To believe is to see angels dancing among the clouds,
To know the wonder of a stardust sky
and the wisdom of the man in the moon.

To believe is to know the value of a nurturing heart,
The innocence of a child's eyes
and the beauty of an aging hand,
for it is through their teachings we learn to love.

To believe is to find the strength
and courage that lies within us.
When it is time to pick up the pieces and begin again.

To believe is to know we are not alone,
That life is a gift and this is our time to cherish it.

To believe is to know that wonderful surprises
are just waiting to happen,
And all our hopes and dreams are within reach.
If only we believe.

Struggle

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole at the end.

Eventually, the butterfly stopped making progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. The man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, but it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If nature allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

And we could never fly ...

Self-Realisation in Life

"The mansion of human life can be built with self-confidence as the foundation, self-satisfaction as pillars and self-sacrifice as roof.  Only then can you have self-realisation in life.  If you want to have self-satisfaction, you should first have self-confidence.  Without self-satisfaction, there can be no happiness in life."

Divine Wisdom

"God does not want anything.  God has no desires at all.  Sometimes, God may act in a way which makes you think that He has desires.  But God has no desires at all.  He has no bondage either.  Whatever He does is for your sake.  Whatever He says, does and thinks is for your sake.  Pray for the welfare of all."

"Rama!"

There lived in a village a husband and his wife.  The wife was constantly chanting the Divine Name - Rama, Krishna, Govinda, performing worship of God and singing His glories.  The husband, however, did not apparently perform any worship.  The wife felt sorry that her husband was not uttering the name of God even once in a day.

One night, the husband could not get sleep and kept tossing in the bed.  In this state of restlessness, he unintentionally uttered "Rama!"  His wife was overjoyed on hearing the Divine Name from the mouth of her husband.

The next day, as soon as she got up from her bed, she collected all the rice available in the house, cooked it and fed the poor people in jubilation.  The husband asked her, "What is the matter?  You are cooking and feeding the poor today.  What is the special occasion?"  The wife replied, "Yesterday night, I heard the Divine Name of Rama from your mouth.  I was overjoyed to hear it.  Hence, this celebration."

On hearing his wife's reply, the husband felt sad that the Name of Rama, which he treasured in the inner recesses of his heart had come out.  "Has my Rama gone out from my heart today?", he felt worried.

Many people do not show their love and devotion to God.  They keep their devotion close to their heart.  However, one day or the other, it gets manifested on its own.

Chant the Divine Name

"When you chant the Divine Name, you will always have good thoughts.  Unfortunately, people today totally forget chanting of the Divine Name.  People think that they are highly educated and have high degrees, but their degrees will not enable them to tread the right path.  Education that does not develop self-inquiry is no education at all."

Bringing Heaven to Earth

I believe in Heaven. I have for a long time now. With me it is not just a matter of faith either. I also believe in Heaven because of all the evidence I see here on Earth. I see this evidence not only in the glorious natural world all around us but also in the endless acts of love that come from the hearts of people as well. These are the people who bring a bit of Heaven to Earth every day and they are the ones I wish to thank now.

To all the people then who pick up the trash off the ground and plant trees and flowers in its place, thank you.

To every parent who spends the day hard at work and then goes home and makes the time to play with and read to their kids, thank you.

To every kind heart who has ever taken in and loved a stray dog or cat, thank you.

To every person who has ever opened their purse or wallet and given to a charity not out of duty but out of love, thank you.

To everyone who has ever offered a ride, opened a door, or shared a smile with a stranger, thank you.

To every good Samaritan who has stopped along the way to help a person in need, thank you.

To every gentle spirit who has shared their laughter, encouraged a friend, or inspired another soul, thank you.

To every single person who has tried to make this world a little better through what they do, thank you.

And to every soul who not only knows the words “Love your neighbor as yourself” but tries to live them as well, thank you.

God doesn’t just want each of us to one day reach Heaven, He also wants each of us to bring a little Heaven down here to Earth as well. Do your best then to love and be loved, to care for others and the world around you, to create joy rather than sadness, and to help everyone you can every chance you can. Do your best to let God’s love live through you. Then you will be ready for Heaven, because you will carry a bit of Heaven with you wherever you go.

Baba's Storytime - Revere your Parents

Extracted from Bhagavan's Divine Discourse in Kodaikanal on 6.5.2005.

Pundarika was a devotee of Lord Panduranga.  He held the view that service to the parents was of paramount importance.

One day, he was serving his parents by massaging their feet. In order to test his love towards his parents, Lord Panduranga appeared before him.  But Pundarika did not want to be distracted from his attention and continued to serve his parents.

Then Lord Panduranga asked him, "My dear son!  I have come to give you My Darshan but you are not looking at Me.  Whom are you serving with such single-minded devotion?"

Pandarika replied that he was serving his parents.  Then Lord Panduranga queried, "Is not God greater than parents?  Won't you have My Darshan at least for one second?"

But Pundarika was not distracted.  He replied, "My parents are living divinities for me.  I cannot have Your Darshan unless I put my parents to sleep.  If You wish to give me Your Darshan, You stand there on the brick till then."

So saying, he pushed a brick towards Lord Panduranga.  The Lord then commended his love and devotion towards his parents and declared, "The world will always remain safe and prosperous if all people cultivate such love and devotion towards their parents.  May such noble sons like you proliferate in this world!"

Great and noble ideas of sacrifice and detachment continued to develop in Pandarika.  He spent his time happily serving his parents and winning their love.

Let All The Worlds Be Happy

Accepting the Inevitable

A grieving mother approached Buddha, carrying the body of her dead child in her arms. She begged him, "I know you can bring him back to life." Buddha replied, "Death is inevitable; I cannot restore his life." The woman was devastated, and was not prepared to accept this answer. Seeing her pain, Buddha said, "I can bring your child back to life, but only if you bring me mustard seeds from a person who has never had a death in his family."

Hearing these words, a hope was awakened within the grieving mother's heart. Immediately she rushed out to beg. She knocked at the first door and asked for some mustard seeds. The middle-aged lady answering the door was very kind and asked her to wait a moment. The woman asked, "There has not been a death in your family, has there?" The lady started crying and said, "Six months ago my husband died in his sleep." The mother was disappointed and she moved on.

The second person she approached was a young man, who said that his grandfather had passed away only a few days earlier. The third was an old woman whose grown up son and daughter-in-law had been killed in an accident. One after the other, the woman found that someone or the other had died in every family.

By the time the woman returned to Buddha, she had made peace with her son's death. She had accepted the inevitable. We should too.

What I Live For

I live for those who love me,
For those who know me true,
For the Heaven that smiles above me,
And awaits my spirit too;
For the cause that lacks assistance,
For the wrong that needs resistance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that I can do.

You are the Embodiments of Atma

"All of you are the embodiments of love and divinity.  You are Atmaswarupa (embodiment of the Atma).  For the sake of identity, you have a name but in reality, all of you are the embodiments of the Atma.  Only the Atma is eternal."

Baba's Storytime - Transcend Duality

Extracted from Bhagavan's Divine Discourse on 20th October 2004)

"On 20th October 1940, I made a declaration revealing My true identity for the first time:

Know that I am Sai in reality,
Cast off your worldly relationships,
Give up your efforts to restrain Me,
The worldly attachments can no longer bind Me,
None, however great he may be, can hold Me."

(Telugu Poem)

Since I made this declaration on the 20th of October, people celebrate this day in a big way.  We should not give too much importance to dates and try to celebrate them as Birthday, Avatar Declaration Day, etc.

Here is a small story.

Once Rukmini, the consort of Lord Krishna, invited Him to her palace saying, "Swami!  Today is my birthday.  Please come for dinner."

Sathyabhama, another consort of Krishna who was present on that occasion, became angry.  She argued with Rukmini, "If today is your Puttina Roju (birthday), this is also my Mettina Roju (the day on which I entered the in-laws' house).  Therefore, He should visit only my house on this day."

Lord Krishna was beyond birthdays and marriage days.  However, He was prepared to visit both the houses.  He did not differentiate between them.

Thus, one has to recognise the principle of unity by transcending all dualities."

Past is Past

"All that has to happen will happen.  Do not worry about it.  Past is past, forget the past.  Future is uncertain, do not brood over it.  Present is important, live in the present and be happy.  Do not worry about past and future.  Where is the past?  Many people have passed away.  Has any of them come back?  None.

Similarly, we do not know anything about future.  Why should we worry about it?  You should try to seek happiness in the present.  When you have such an attitude, you will never worry about anything in life.  What is the shape of worry?  It is a mentally created fear.  We should never worry.  A true devotee will not have any worries.  You cannot call yourself a true devotee if you are beset with worries.  Hurry, worry, curry are the cause of heart diseases.  One should therefore avoid hurry, worry, curry."

I Am There

Do you need Me ?
I am there.
You cannot see Me, yet I am the light you see by.
You cannot hear Me, yet I speak through your voice.
You cannot feel Me, yet I am the power at work in your hands.

I am at work, though you do not understand My ways.
I am at work, though you do not understand My works.
I am not strange visions. I am not mysteries.

Only in absolute stillness, beyond self, can you know Me
as I AM, and then but as a feeling and a faith.

Yet I am here. Yet I hear. Yet I answer.
When you need ME, I am there.
Even if you deny Me, I am there.
Even when you feel most alone, I am there.
Even in your fears, I am there.
Even in your pain, I am there.

I am there when you pray and when you do not pray.
I am in you, and you are in Me.
Only in your mind can you feel separate from Me, for
only in your mind are the mists of "yours" and "mine".
Yet only with your mind can you know Me and experience Me.

Empty your heart of empty fears.
When you get yourself out of the way, I am there.
You can of yourself do nothing, but I can do all.
And I AM in all.

Though you may not see the good, good is there, for
I am there. I am there because I have to be, because I AM.

Only in Me does the world have meaning; only out of Me does the world take form; only because of ME does the world go forward.
I am the law on which the movement of the stars
and the growth of living cells are founded.

I am the love that is the law's fulfilling. I am assurance.
I am peace. I am oneness. I am the law that you can live by.
I am the love that you can cling to. I am your assurance.
I am your peace. I am ONE with you. I am.

Though you fail to find ME, I do not fail you.
Though your faith in Me is unsure, My faith in you never
wavers, because I know you, because I love you.

Beloved, I am there.

Divine Wisdom

Less Luggage, Happy Journey

"Life is like a train journey; young children have a long way to go, but elders have to alight from the train pretty soon.  You must learn to make your journey comfortable and happy.  Do not carry heavy, unwanted luggage with you that will make the journey miserable.  Do not indulge in fault finding and picking quarrels with others.  Do not desire to have the best things for yourselves only.  Share with others around you the good things you are given.  Anger, hatred, envy and jealousy are the heavy luggage that I ask you to avoid taking with you on the journey."

The Tiger Skin

The Lord while in His boyhood as Sathya was quite well known even beyond the village boundaries for His miraculous creation of Holy Ash, that was considered as the panacea for everything. ...And He would even transform a person with mere looks and words of advice. Read on how, He, as young Sathya implanted the greater lesson of non-violence in a British sub-divisional officer who was out hunting wild animals. An extract from “Sathyam Sivam Sundaram” as written by Prof. N. Kasturi.

His return from Uravakonda and the announcement at Puttaparthi that He was the Sai Baba of Shirdi, came when He was only fourteen years of age. But the villages around and even far-off Anantapur (40 miles away), knew of His being Sai Baba.

One day a jeep-driver crossed the river bed and walked the streets of Puttaparthi, trying to locate Swami. His master, a young English sub-divisional officer, had gone on shikar (hunting) to the forest on the other bank of Chithravathi, and while returning to Anantapur, the vehicle stopped right opposite Puttaparthi village. The driver did his best while the officer also tried his hand, but the vehicle could not be moved.

The driver suggested that there was a boy at Puttaparthi, who could create Holy Ash, yes, “Create, by a circular movement of his palm, the very panacea which would cure the ills of all, even the Jeep!” Stranded half-way, the Englishman agreed and let the driver go to the village, while he himself sat in the jeep.

The driver bumped into the Boy at last, but Baba said, “I am coming, myself to the jeep.” He walked across the sandy bed, and reaching the road, He peeped into the vehicle and saw the carcass of a tiger which the officer had shot just two hours ago.

Baba said, “I stopped the jeep at this place, for it is a mother whose three 2-week old cubs are at this very time, loudly wailing and calling out to her, that you are carrying. Go back! Recover those cubs and gift them to some zoo where they will be well looked after. And do not again shoot wild beasts, for they have not injured you. Why do you go in search of them, surrounding them and laying traps to catch them. Shoot them instead with your superior weapons, such as your camera. That won’t maim or kill them.”

The Englishman obeyed and never carried a gun any more when he went into the forest. Shooting wild beasts armed with a camera, he discovered, was a bigger adventure and more sathwik.

Swami loved animals so deeply that He could not tolerate killing them or torturing them. The officer’s conscience was so touched by Swami’s counsel that he could not live with the skin of the tiger when it came back from the taxidermist. He presented the cubs to the zoo and brought the skin to Puttaparthi.

The Prasanthi Mandir was under construction then. He met Baba and placed the skin at His Feet. Sakamma of Coorg pleaded with Him to sit on it in yogi fashion, with a rosary between His fingers. She had a photographer ready. And Baba obliged, though he had never sat in dhyana or held a rosary!

A Prayer for Courage

Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers,
But to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain,
But for the heart to conquer it.
Let me not look for allies in life's battlefield,
But to my own strength.
Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved,
But hope for the patience to win my freedom.
Grant me that I may not be a coward,
feeling your mercy in my success alone,
But let me find the grasp of your hand in my failure.
