The Candle

A man had a little daughter, an only and much beloved child. He lived only for her, she was his life. So when she became ill and her illness resisted the efforts of the best obtainable physicians, he became like a man possessed, moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health.
His best efforts proved fruitless, however, and the child died. The father was totally irreconcilable. He became a bitter recluse, shutting himself away from his many friends, refusing every activity that might restore his poise and bring him back to his normal self.

Then one night he had a dream. He was in heaven and witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels. They were marching in an apparently endless line past the Great White Throne. Every white-robed, angelic tot carried a candle. He noticed, however, that one child’s candle was not lit. Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl. Rushing towards her, while the pageant faltered, he seized her in his arms, caressed her tenderly, and asked, “How is that your candle is the only one not lit?” “Father, they often relight it, but your tears always put it out again,” she said.

Just then he awoke from from his dream. The lesson was crystal clear, and it’s effects were immediate. From that hour on he was no longer a recluse, but mingled freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates. No longer would his little darling’s candle be extinguished by his useless tears.

A Memorable Incident

"There at Kodaikanal, one day Swami was distributing peppermints and chocobars and various other things. Suddenly, He said, "There is one fellow who is not eating and he is dumping them all in his bag.  Come on, boys, search everybody's bag."  It was something like income tax search, income tax raid!

Then I said softly,"Bhagavan, why all this trouble?  Yes!  I'm not eating.  I am keeping them in the bag."  Bhagavan said, "Why do you do that?"  "Swami, I have four children, they expect something from me.  Whatever You give is most valuable for us.  When I take back these most precious things, the children will jump in joy."  Swami said, "Oh, is it so?"  Then He told everybody there, "Hereafter, you give Anil Kumar five items, four for his children and one for him."

Then He said to me, :"Just as you feel happy when your children eat, I feel happy when you eat here."

How can I forget that incident!  I don't remember anybody loves me more than Bhagavan Baba.  This is the feeling of every devotee.  It is the experience of millions of devotees all over the world."

Sai Madhuryam

Verily the light that illumines all the hearts is Divine,
The love that emanates from each call is Divine.
Break not the Divine command in your intellectual conceit
For pride surely goeth before a fall.
All education that is devoid of spiritual purity
Is replete with hatred and envy,
Like a dark dwelling infested with bats,
Know this to be the truth.

Baba's Storytime - Compassion to Living Beings

Once an animal fell into a pit of mud.  When it put its one foot out of the pit in the effort to come out, the other foot slipped deeper into it.  The helpless animal was thus put to a lot of suffering.

Two days passed in this manner.  None of the passersby who passed that way tried to bring an end to its suffering.  Some feared that if they tried to pull the animal out, they might themselves slip into the mud pit.  So they went without doing anything.  For some mischievous youngsters who stood there, it was great fun to watch the animal as it tried to come out and slipped again into the mud pit.

Meanwhile, a Sadhu passed that way. He was very much distressed to see the pitiable condition of the animal.  Without thinking a bit, he immediately jumped into the mud pit. At this, the onlookers remarked with derision, "When so many strong men are here who could not venture to bring the animal out of the pit, how can this lean and thin renunciant perform this arduous task?"

The holy man however paid scant attention to the remarks of the onlookers. With the name of God on his lips, he prayed to God for help and strength.  Invoking thus the grace of God, he slowly and steadily brought the animal out, half by pulling and half by carrying it on his shoulders.  He made it drink some water after this.  The mischievous youngsters remarked derisively, "What an act of Seva!  But for this, we could have had fun for some more time."  The only man said to them,"Dear ones!  What I have done is not Seva. Neither is it an act of benevolence. I have saved this animal to relieve myself of the agony that I underwent on seeing its suffering.  I performed this task only to get over my own distress.  Now I am relieved of my agony."  Saying this, the holy man went his way.

Krishna Jai!

Govinda Krishna Jai Gopala Krishna Jai Gopala Bala Bala Radha Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Gopika Mala Hari Pyari Mayi Mira Mana Vihari
Madana Mohana Murali Dhari Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Jai, Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai
Krishna Jai Rama Krishna Jai Radha Krishna Jai
Bala Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Jai!

Krishna was born in the darkness of the night, into the  locked confines of a jail.  However, at the moment of his birth, the guards fell asleep, the chains were broken and the barred doors gently opened.  Similarly, as soon as Krishna (Chetna, Awareness) takes birth in our hearts, all darkness (Negativity) fades.  All chains (Ego, I, Me, Myself) are broken. And all prison doors we keep ourselves in (Caste, Religion, Profession, Relations etc.) are opened.

That is the real Message and Essence of Janmashtami.

As is the Action ...

"People think that it is God who is the cause of their happiness and sorrow.  But it is not really so.  Each one is responsible for his actions and reaps their consequences, good or bad.   God is the eternal witness and does not interfere in this.  He neither gives happiness nor sorrow. If you talk endearingly to someone, he will also speak to you in the same loving manner.  But if you talk in an arrogant way, you will get a similar response. As is the action, so is the reaction."

All Forms are His

"God cannot be limited to any particular form.  Consider all forms as His.  You may go anywhere, worship any form.  All forms are divine.  When you develop such love for and faith in God, you can see Him everywhere and experience His love.  It is not possible to experience divinity without developing love.  That is why the Gopikas prayed to Krishna thus:

Oh Krishna, play Your sweet flute and
sow the seeds of love in the desert of loveless hearts.
Let the rain of love fall on earth and make
the rivers of love flow.

(Telugu song)

The Gopikas yearned for Krishna's love and nothing else."

Think of God

"One who thinks of God constantly will never be put to hardships.  You may argue that you continue to suffer though you think of God all the time.  How can you say that thinking of God has not helped you at all?  It certainly would have mitigated your suffering without your knowledge.  God's grace will certainly alleviate your suffering.  By chanting the Divine Name, even mountains of sin will vanish like mist into thin air.  Sarvada Sarvakaleshu Sarvatra Harichintanam.  You should think of God at all places, at all times and under all circumstances with pure love and total faith."

"Every single being, even those who are hostile to us, is just as afraid of suffering as we are, and seeks happiness in the same way we do.  Every person has the same right as we do to be happy and not to suffer.   So let's take care of others wholeheartedly, of both our friends and our enemies.  This is the basis for true compassion."

To Love Life

During the last four years of her life my Mom fought a valiant but losing battle against cancer. During that time she lost her health, her hair, and 40 pounds. She was in and out of the hospital more times than I could count. In the end as her life's energy ebbed away we all gathered at her bedside and said goodbye. She was only 55 years old.

For a long while after her death I was depressed and angry at God. My own health broke down and I contracted double pneumonia. In time my body healed and my heart as well. It was the love of my children that finally pulled me out of my despair and helped me to begin to live again. Still, I continued to ask God why my Mom had to die so young.

It was only years later that I began to see clearly what my Mom had done in those last four years of her life. While cancer was beating her body, it certainly wasn't beating her soul. In her last four years here my Mom lived as she had never lived before. Even with cancer she worked outside of our home and touched the lives of her co-workers with her gentle humor and kind spirit. She reconnected with old friends that she hadn't seen in years and made special memories with each one of them. She and my Dad grew closer in those last four years than I had ever seen them before. There was a love and a tenderness between them that touched us all. Mom was there for me and my two brothers as well. During her time with us she brightened our souls with her love and she helped us to grow strong enough to go on without her.

In her last four years my Mom completed her mission here. She showed us how to love God. She showed us how to meet death. She showed us that fear always flees in the face of joy. She showed us that to live life is to love life, no matter how much pain you have and no matter how much time you have left. Thanks Mom! I will always love you.

Sai Madhuryam

The story of Lord Rama is amazing,
It purifies the lives of the people in all the three worlds,
It is like the sickle that cuts the creepers or worldly bondage,
It is like a good friend who helps you in times of need,
It is like a shelter for the sages and seers doing penance in the forest.

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

How to be Near the Lord

When Rama was going to the forest, he told Sita to stay back and serve his parents. He said that he would come back in fourteen years. But Sita gave up all her comforts to accompany Rama to the forest. Because she sacrificed everything, she could have the company of Rama. What is the reason? Sita thought, believed and put into practice the ideal that to a wife, her husband is of utmost importance. This is the essence of the culture of our land.
However, the enticement of Maya at times is irresistible. In the forest, it so happened that Sita was attracted by the golden deer, although she gave up much more valuable things earlier in life. Rama went after the golden deer to secure it for her. The final result was that Sita had to leave Rama and go away. Sita had to lose the sacred company of her husband, and she was taken away to Lanka. It implies that when she gave up Kama, or lust, Rama was near her; but the moment she was attracted by the desires, Rama became distant from her. If you want Rama to be with you, Kama has to be given up. If you have worldly desires, then Rama will not be near you. You have to choose between Rama or Kama, that is, either you cling to God or to his Maya.

Understanding Service

"While performing service activities, never consider yourself as the doer.  Always think that whatever service activities you are undertaking are for your own upliftment.  These service activities must be undertaken to develop self-confidence which will lead to self-satisfaction, self-sacrifice and ultimately to self-realisation.  Thus, service is meant to realise your true Self.  It should never be considered as help for others."

Sai Bhajana Bina Sukha Shanthi Nahi

Sai Bhajana Bina Sukha Shanthi Nahi
Hari Nama Bina Ananda Nahi
Prema Bhakti Bina Uddhara Nahi
Guru Seva Bina Nirvana Nahi
Sai Bhajana Bina Sukha Shanthi Nahi
Japa Dhyana Bina Sanyoga Nahi
Prabhu Darshan Bina Pragnana Nahi
Daya Dharma Bina SatkarmaNahi
Bhagawan Bina Koi Apana Nahi
Sai Nama Bina Paramatma Nahi

Without singing the glory of Lord Sai, one cannot achieve any peace.
It is not possible to realise bliss without worshipping Lord Hari.
Without love and devotion how can one get liberated?
It is not possible to attain the state of Nirvana (Mukti or Salvation) without serving the Divine Preceptor.
Without engaging in the recitation of the Lord's name and meditating on Him,there cannot be any union with Him.
The vision "Darshan" of the Lord will endow one with Surpeme Wisdom.
Those deeds which are suffused with Love and Compassion are Righteous and Truthful Deeds.
Except for God nobody belongs to us.
The Supreme Lord is none other than Lord Sai.

Baba's Storytime - The Ghost in the Forest

Once a little boy and his father were going to the next village.  On the way they had to cross a dense forest.  As they were about to enter the forest, the boy said, with a frightened look in his eyes, "I don't want to go in there. I have heard from my friends that there is a ghost in the forest."  The father smiled and said, "Don't be afraid.  I am with you, and if the ghost comes I will protect you and chase the ghost away!"

The boy felt reassured and they continued their walk and crossed the forest.  The next time the boy had to cross the forest, his teacher was accompanying him.  Again the fear of the ghost gripped the mind of the boy and he expressed his fear to the teacher.  The teacher told him, "Look my boy!  There is no such thing as a ghost.  There never was one in this forest.  So there is nothing for you to be afraid of."

The boy was convinced and the fear of the ghost once and for all left his mind.

The ghost is the ego.  Many of our well-wishers, like the scriptures, will tell us, "Yes, there is an ego, but we will show you how to deal with it and show you different paths to erase it."  But only a true teacher of a spiritual master will tell you the direct path.  "There is no such thing as ego."  All is Atma and there is no second to cause the feeling of separation from IT.

Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace
The value of all your education is zero;
Berect of truth, righteousness, love and peace
The sanctity of all your acts of charity and kindness is zero;
Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace
The utility of all your positions of power is zero;
Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace
The result of all your good deeds is zero.

Love and Kindness

Spread love everywhere you go,
first of all in your own house.
Give love to your children,
to your wife and husband,
to a next-door neighbour.

Let no one ever come to you
without leaving better and happier.

Be the living expression
of God's kindness:
kindness in your face,
kindness in your eyes,
kindness in your smile,
kindness in your warm greeting.

The Whisper Test

Mary Ann Bird was born with multiple birth defects. She suffered not only from her physical impairments but also with the emotional trauma of "being different" from others.
I grew up knowing I was different, and I hated it. I was born with a cleft palate, and when I started school, my classmates made it clear to me how I looked to others: a little girl with a misshapen lip, crooked nose, lopsided teeth, and garbled speech.
When schoolmates asked, "What happened to your lip?" I'd tell them I'd fallen and cut it on a piece of glass. Somehow it seemed more acceptable to have suffered an accident than to have been born different. I was convinced that no one outside my family could love me.
There was, however, a teacher in the second grade whom we all adored -- Mrs. Leonard by name. She was short, round, happy -- a sparkling lady.

Annually we had a hearing test. Mrs. Leonard gave the test to everyone in the class, and finally it was my turn. I knew from past years that as we stood against the door and covered one ear, the teacher sitting at her desk would whisper something, and we would have to repeat it back -- things like "The sky is blue" or "Do you have new shoes?" I waited there for those words that God must have put into her mouth, those seven words that changed my life. Mrs. Leonard said, in her whisper, "I wish you were MY little girl."

To Love, To Serve, To Give

O Lord of Puttaparthi,
Source of all Love divine;
O secret, holy refuge,
Within this heart of mine;
By Your lake of peace and stillness,
I shall in silence stay,
To hear Your words of Truth and Love
To guide me through each day,
Along the narrow way.

Your Lotus eyes that see within
And search each deep recess,
Transforming every wayward heart,
They purify and bless,
They fill with happiness.

And let my tongue recite Your name
With overflowing joy,
In tones that never cloy.

Your perfect hands that only give,
Heal, guide, protect and bless;
So graceful in their every move
To comfort and caress,
To banish all distress.

O grant us all Your Darshan,
That sight removes all care,
To see You face to face, to breathe
Your fragrance on the air,
Vibhuti from Your holy hand,
Received with gratitude,
The symbol of protecting Love,
Eternal sacred food
Uplifts the multitude.

So humble, peaceful, gentle,
You show us how to live
With soft sweet words and willingness
To love to serve, to give.
So quietly, yet swiftly
Among the throng You move;
A touch, a glance, a life is changed
By nothing but Your Love,
your all-embracing Love.
