A Morning Gift

Every morning when I wake up I find a neatly wrapped gift lying on my chest.

Now I have to admit that in my past I always pushed this gift aside without even looking at it. I was too rushed and determined to get things done to even consider opening it. I was working, pushing, and trying so hard to make my life work out with so little progress at the end of each day. I trudged through all of my pains, challenges and difficulties while things went from bad to worse. I kept crawling through my life until I was too exhausted to go on.

Then one morning I finally noticed that beautiful gift lying there and opened it for the first time.

These days when I open my eyes and see the gift waiting for me, I smile. I carefully and happily tear off the paper and open the box. I take out the gift and hold it in my arms. I give thanks for it and bring it with me wherever I go all through the day. This gift makes my life so much better. I meet people with a smiling face and a loving heart. I laugh easily, sing often, and feel my spirit dancing even when my feet don’t. I face life’s struggles, challenges, difficulties, and pains with hope, determination, optimism, and joy. I know that whatever I must face and whatever I must do that this glorious gift will carry me through.

This gift is Grace.

It is the unconditional love of God. It is the unmerited help of our Heavenly Father in all we do. Grace is waiting for us each and every morning of our lives. It is waiting to make a home in our hearts and minds. It is waiting for us to share it with the world. Grace is there ready to help us live our lives with love every single day.

What are you going to do when you wake up tomorrow morning? Are you going to shove this gift aside and struggle to make it on your own? Or are you going to thank God for this precious gift, take it in your hands, and place it joyfully into your soul?

Realisation of the Divine

"Realisation of the Divine is the goal. But most of our actions are related to worldly concerns. The only way to sanctify all actions is to do them as acts of worship, as an offering to the Divine. Thereby life itself becomes sacred."

Can I Ever Repay?

Even if I sing all the songs,
To recall Sai's glory,
Even if I chant all Thy names,
So pure and holy.

Even if I touch Swami's feet,
For one thousand times,
Even if I compose 108 poems,
In rhymes.

Can I ever repay
Baba's love and grace,
So Divine, so limitless,
On human race?

Indra Devi's Story

Indra Devi used to run a yoga centre at a place on the California-Mexico border and had been coming to Baba for many years.  She had no plans to go for Baba's Birthday Celebrations in 1969 but as the day approached, the longing to be there grew.

One day the telephone rang.  Someone spoke on behalf of Warner Brothers, the famous studios.  He said, "Mataji, Warner Brothers are keen to produce a documentary on the life of Sai Baba.  Could you go to India tomorrow itself and obtain permission from Him for this?  Warner Brothers will take care of the arrangements for your travel and the expenses thereof."

Indra Devi readily agreed.  It was confirmed by the Manager of Air India at Los Angeles that Warner Brothers had purchased the tickets for her.  She happily left for India.

She reached Puttaparthi in time for  Baba's Birthday and had a private interview with Baba, where He materialized a Lakshmi medallion for her.  In all these joy-filled times, she totally forgot about the request of Warner Brothers and neither did Baba, the Master Prankster, remind her about it.  She remembered only after her departure.

On her return to Los Angeles, she went to Warner Brothers to beg to be excused for not taking Baba's permission, though they sent her at their cost purposely for that.  Warner Brothers people were puzzled and denied having paid for her trip to India for meeting Sai Baba.  In fact they had never heard of Sai Baba!

The Three Ornaments

"With faith in the omnipresence of the Divine, man should engage himself in good deeds, cherish good thoughts and dedicate his life to good practices. His words should be words of truth. The ornaments he should cherish are truthfulness in speech, charity for the hands and listening to sacred lore for the ears."

Every Moment is New

"New year days come and go. Of what use are they? Samvathsara (the year) is one of the names of the Lord. Every moment is new. Why wait for a whole year to make the change in yourselves? As long as you are caught up in worldly celebrations of New year, Vaikuntha Ekaadashi and the like, God will elude you. You can realise God only when you forget the phenomenal world and the body-consciousness."

That is Christmas

Every time a hand reaches out
To help another
That is Christmas

Every time someone puts anger aside
And strives for understanding
That is Christmas

Every time people forget their differences
And realize their love for each other
That is Christmas

May this Christmas bring us
Closer to the spirit of human understanding
Closer to the blessing of peace!

Holy Christmas

“Today, Christmas is celebrated in many countries. In every country, small groups of people go to their respective churches, listen to the sermon, and return to their homes. In some places people eat, drink, and make themselves merry. But nowhere in the world can you find Christmas being celebrated with the solemnity and holiness found in Prasanthi Nilayam. Here are gathered men and women from all countries. There are many denominations among Christians, and the members thereof celebrate Christmas in their separate ways. Only in Prasanthi Nilayam do Christians of all denominations and men and women of other faiths join to celebrate Christmas. All of them work in unison. Here is a concrete manifestation of the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God”.

Ideals of Sai

"What are the ideals of Sai?
Share Love, be united, consider all to be the children of God.
Foster the brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God.
When we accept and obey these, we can call ourselves devotees of Sai."

Blessed Are We

In spite of celestial and heavenly beings,
You chose to be amidst human beings.

We are "heartfull" to see You, all the while,
And fortunate to witness Your Divine Life style.

Your guidance has led the mortals
To walk through the enchanting garden of morals.

Regardless of whatever we did,
You took care of us, like the very eye lid.

Holy ashes of blessings for the needy and old,
Greeting Your devotees as lump of gold.

Indeed redeemed is this human birth,
To witness God on our Planet Earth.

The Legend of the Christmas Rose

On a cold December night, everybody was coming to see their new Savior and brought Him all kinds of gifts and presents. The three Wise Men came in with their valuable gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold and offered them to Baby Jesus.

At that point, a shepherdess, Madelon, who had seen the wise men passing through, reached the door of the stable, to see the Child. However, being very poor and having brought nothing to offer to the child, she felt helpless and started weeping quietly at the sight of all the wonderful gifts that the Three Wise Men had got for the child. Earlier, she had searched, in vain, for flowers all over the countryside but there was not even a single bloom to be found in the bitter winter.

An angel outside the door was watching over her and knew about her fruitless search. He took pity on her and, when he saw her head droop down in sorrow, decided to help her with a little miracle. He gently brushed aside the snow at her feet and where her tears had fallen, sprang a beautiful cluster of waxen white winter roses with pink tipped petals. Then he softly whispered into the shepherdess's ear that these Christmas roses are far more valuable than any myrrh, frankincense or gold, for they are pure and made of love.

The maiden was pleasantly surprised when she heard those words and joyfully gathered the flowers and offered them to the Holy Infant, who, seeing that the gift was reared with tears of love, smiled at her with gratitude and satisfaction. Thus, the Christmas rose came to symbolize hope, love and all that is wonderful in this season.

Trayee Sessions - Pt.2

Tulsi Leaf to Gold Coin

Swami was walking towards the door opening onto the stage of the Sai Ramesh Hall in Brindavan, in His inimitable gentle majesty.  While passing the Tulsi pedestal, He plucked a leaf from the plant and moved on.  Sudheendran, a student, was standing nearby.  Swami went to him and dropped something in his outstretched palm.  I thought it was a Tulsi leaf, but Swami had covered it with His palm and was telling the boy, "Don't show it to anyone."

Shri Narasimha Murthy rushed forward and prayed to Swami to kindly allow him to see it.  He lifted His palm for a moment and closed it again.  Narasimha Murthy saw a gold coin on the boy's palm.  The Tulsi leaf had been transformed into a gold coin.  Swami told him again, "Don't show it to others, it has your date of birth on it" and walked on.  The boy put the coin in the folds of his handkerchief and very carefully slipped it into his shirt pocket.  The matter did not end there.  This was just the beginning.

After the bhajans, Swami came to the door of the Trayee compound.  He stopped again in front of Sudheendran and asked him to show the coin.  With a look of joy, the boy took out the handkerchief and opened its folds only to find the Tulsi leaf.  The boy was baffled and his face fell.  Swami smiled mischievously and told him to eat the leaf, which he did with grief written on his face.  Swami turned back and beckoned to the boy to come near.  As the boy rushed towards Him, He said, "Ayyo, papam" and waved His hand.  There was the gold coin again. He gave it to the boy whose face lit up with great joy.

After a few days, Swami took the coin from the boy and blew on it four times.  It grew four times bigger in size.  Swami had granted the boy the golden gift of faith along with the gold coin.

Trayee Sessions - Pt.1

Swami's students are His favourite devotees.  His love and humour manifest themselves in their most intensive form during His interaction with them. It is in their company that Swami is fully relaxed and in his jolliest mood.  Given below are two instances which illustrate this point.  These took place in Trayee, His residence in Brindavan, Kadugodi, Bangalore.  In addition to students, teaching staff and some old devotees are also present on these occasions, which have come to be known as Trayee Sessions.

Groundnut is transformed

One evening, at the end of the Trayee session, when Swami got up from the jhoola, a snack of fried groundnuts was offered to Him.  Swami looked towards Shri Narasimha Murthy, the then warden, with a lovely smile.  He picked up one groundnut and threw it to him and said, "Eat it."  As Narasimha Murthy was about to put it in his mouth, Swami intervened.  "No, it is not for eating, look at it closely."

Narasimha Murthy was astonished to discover that the groundnut had been transformed into a tiny crystal Ganesha.  He looked at it with wonder as the boys craned their necks to get a sight of it.

"Show it to them," commanded the Lord with a mischievous smile. As he held up the tiny idol for all to see, Swami looked towards the boys and said jokingly, "What would have happened with your warden, if he had eaten up Ganesha?"  Everyone had a hearty laugh.

Divine Dream

Through hidden spaces of ether,
I see not the lands of astral or nether.
It is something beyond human race,
I saw it through my Baba's grace.

I saw a light, so pure, bright and ever high,
Verily like the Lord's Third Eye.
In that, Moon was a speck and Sun, a dot,
Ever free from fear and pain, as sought.

It has scaled hill, heaven and horizon,
Plains even the brightest galaxy in comparison.
In fact, it is that very source,
Reverberating in every atom as life force.

In that light there is neither day or night,
Neither seen any soul's sin or plight.
I exist myself, detached from the body or mind,
All are alike, it is difficult to trace and find.

This light splits time into several ages,
Present invisibly in all the life's stages.
Towards this light we all travel,
While the successful stand as a spiritual marvel.

Baba's Storytime - The Season of Christmas

"The season of Christmas is associated with Christmas Grandpa or Santa Claus. Tokovan was his original name. He was born in Turkey. He began his career as a priest and gradually began to attain spiritual heights. How did he become a spiritual giant? By the spirit of sacrifice. He used to give a chocolate a doll, or a gift to any child he met. All his life he kept on giving continuously. When Christmas was approaching, all the children used to run behind Santa Claus. He used to carry all the gifts in a bag and distribute to all the children. In what manner did he distribute them? He said, "Here is a token of God's love. Here is a token of God's love," and thus distributed them. Eventually he came to be called Christmas Grandpa, and his original name was forgotten.

The important message that I want to convey today, which Jesus also propagated, is one of love and compassion. So, boys and girls, on this holy and sacred day, when we celebrate the birthday of that holy personage, we must conduct ourselves in accordance with his message. It is easy to celebrate birthdays, but we must also keep in sight the purity and message of the person whose birthday we celebrate."

(From Bhagawan's Divine Discourse of 25.12.1995)

The Message of Jesus

"Develop love of God. All other forms of love are not love at all but only fleeting and impermanent attachments. Man's biggest folly is forgetting his Divinity. All should realize that they come from God. All are children of God. Everyone should seek to get nearer and nearer to God. That is spiritual practice (sadana). You must feel that God dwells in your heart (hridayavasi). You must develop compassion in the heart, because without it, the heart is only a stone.

That is the message of Jesus: The message of love. Love is God. Live in love. Start the day with love. Spend the day with love. End the day with love. This is the way to God. Only the person who is filled with love will be dear to the Lord."

Quotable Quotes

“If a child smiles, if an adult smiles, that is very important. If in our daily lives we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. If we really know how to live, what better way to start the day than with a smile? Our smile affirms our awareness and determination to live in peace and joy. The source of a true smile is an awakened mind.”

Vibhuti Cures Brain Tumour

There were occasions when Swami enquired about the parents and family members of His students and very lovingly with much concern, provided them with solutions for the problems faced by them.  In the cases of severe illness, He materialised vibhuti and gave it to them to be sent to their families.

There was one particular case where a brain surgery was suggested by doctors for the mother of a student, Sandeepan, from Calcutta, whose parents had settled down at Bangalore with the sole purpose of having frequent Darshans of Bhagawan.  The doctors felt that she could not survive without the surgery.  But Swami advised Sandeepan against surgery and asked him to bring his parents to Brindavan after He returned there from Kodaikanal.  The mother was discharged from the hospital against medical advice.

Bhagawan granted them an interview at Brindavan and vibhuti given by Him cured the mother completely without any medication or surgery!

A Christmas Story

"Christmas is no fun when you're poor", I thought to myself as I slowly climbed the steps to my cold, damp apartment. I was a young, struggling, substitute teacher whose calls into work had been few and far between. Money was tight, bills were due, and it was Christmas time. My wife and I couldn't even afford to get gifts for each other and the only gifts we could get for our young daughter and son were a few stuffed animals that I had found on sale.

I opened the door to the apartment and brought in the gifts I had hidden in our old car's trunk until Christmas. Then I handed them to my 4 year old son and 18 month old daughter. I watched with a sad smile while they did their best to tear off the wrapping paper. As they pulled out their toys, though, I noticed their own smiles grow wide. Their eyes lit up and they jumped up and down with glee. My daughter happily hugged her stuffed animal and then hugged her Mom and me as well. I laughed as I watched my children play with their stuffed animals for hours that day, and I thanked God for the greater gift they had given me.

It has been over twenty years now but I still remember that Christmas like it was yesterday. It was one of those special days that stays in your heart and soul forever. It was one of those special moments that helps to shape the rest of your life. I still cherish the gift of pure love that my son and daughter gave me that day. I still strive to share it in my own life as well.

The great inspirational author Leo Buscaglia once wrote that: "There is no lesser or greater gift if the gift is love." In truth, the most priceless gift of all time was a gift of love from God given to us as a poor baby warmed in the hay of a manger. It was a gift that changed the world forever. It was a gift that showed us all how to live and how to love. May your every Christmas be rich in love and may all your days be full of goodness and joy."

Sai Madhuryam

Of what avail is it to be
A scholar or clever intellectual
If one does not practice even a
Fraction of what one knows ?
Not all the luxuries and pleasures of the world
Will give a man contentment and peace.
Only when he realises the truth of the Spirit
Will he experience true peace and contentment.

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

Four Different Qualities

"There are four different qualities in man: humanness, the animal nature, the demonic nature and the Divine nature. When man follows the dictates of the body, he is a prey to his animal nature. When he is subject to the vagaries of the mind, he becomes demonic. When he is following the Aatma, he is manifesting his Divinity. When he is governed by all three--the body, the mind and the Aatma--he is human."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~
(Divine Discourse - 4.10.1992)

Attitude

"Your attitude to God should not be based on the fulfilment or non-fulfilment of petty desires. You must feel that whatever happens to you is for your own good. You must have the firm belief that whether your wishes are fulfilled or not, nothing harmful will happen to you. Be firm in your faith in weal and woe. Develop an optimistic attitude towards life."

Baba's Storytime - The Best Way to Serve God

One can serve God only through Shrama and Prema, (effort with love). The best way to serve God is to love all and serve all.

There was an old lady in Mathura. She used to take blankets in the darkest hour of the night and distribute them to poor people who were shivering in the cold.

One day she was bending her head and serving the poor. A few youths gathered there and asked her
"Oh! Lady! while you are doing such selfless work, why are you bending your head and walking?"

She replied: “God has given so much of wealth to the people with so many hands. But I am able to serve the people only with my two hands. Is it not a thing about which I should feel ashamed?"

We are not prepared to share with others and are only ready to receive whatever we can get. This is one way traffic. "There is no chance of immortality without doing sacrifice" say the Vedhas. You should sacrifice and share what you have with others. Then only you may have peace. You should make others happy. You must do the Saadhana of Sacrifice. You should provide help to other devotees.

Charity is the beauty for hands and not decoration with bangles. The Mind is like a key to the lock of the heart. If you turn it towards God you get liberation; if you turn it towards the world you get into bondage. You should develop the feeling "Lokaas Samasthaas Sukhino Bhavanthu." You should aspire for world unity. Out of unity you get purity and from purity comes divinity. Now there is only community and enmity, which has to be eliminated. Prema is the binding factor to unite all humanity together. Therefore, cultivate Prema or Universal Love.

In Your smile,
I know that You are,
The Wirepuller,

The Mansions of Salvation,
Redeeming us, once for all.

Thank You, Swami!

The Lord Looks at Your Heart

"The Lord judges you by the sincerity of your thoughts, not by the forms of your worship. The Lord sees your bhakthi (devotion) and not shakthi (power). He cares for your gunas (qualities) and not your kula (caste or lineage). He looks at your chiththam (heart) and not at your viththam (wealth). You must strive to purify your heart and engage yourself in righteous action, with devotion and integrity. No saadhana (spiritual discipline) is of any use if you are involved in sinful deeds."

With a mind bereft of scruples
And filled with bad impulses,

Where do you wander in vain?
What you seek is within you
Know that truth.

The Personal Letter

One day, in darshan, Prof. Anil Kumar was reading a letter from his daughter, who was a doctor living in Minneapolis, USA.  She was doing her internship there and had written a very touching letter that he should not worry about her.  She then went on to relate a little miracle that had happened to her.

One day while returning form the hospital, she missed a turning and got lost.  She could not find the way back to the hostel where she was staying.  Although she felt like crying, mentally she began singing some of Swami's bhajans and prayed to Swami for help.  Immediately an American stopped his car and said, "May I help you?  Where do you want go go?"  She gave him her address and he dropped her off at her hostel.  She concluded by saying that he should not worry about her and that Americans were very kind people.

Prof. Anil Kumar folded the letter and kept it in his pocket, wiping away the tears of joy that were flowing down his cheeks and then suddenly, he realized that Swami was standing in front of him.

Swami said, "Where is the letter?"  He replied with feigned innocence, "Letter, Swami?"  But Swami was not to be put off.  "Yes, the letter you have in your pocket, give it to me," insisted Swami.  Prof. Anil Kumar replied, "But it is a personal letter, Swami," to which He responded, "Oh, is there anything personal between you and Me, if you are not going to give it to me, I will tell you what is in it."  Prof. Anil Kumar made a last effort, "Swami, it is a letter from my daughter."

Swami said that his daughter in US constantly thought of Him whilst Prof. Anil Kumar being close to Him, thought only of his daughter.  That was the difference.

Baba's Storytime - The Bhasmaasura Story

Once Eeshvara gave a boon to Bhasmaasura as desired by him, namely that whatever he touched should be reduced to ashes. Immediately on getting the boon he lost his sense of gratitude to Eeshvara. He wanted to place his hand on Eeshvara himself!

Eeshvara could not protect himself. He went to Vishnu, who has the duty of being a protector. Even as protector Vishnu had to observe the laws of Dharma. He could not punish Bhasmaasura straightaway. He staged a drama. He assumed the form of a most beautiful damsel, Mohini.

On seeing her, Bhasmaasura's passion was aroused. He ran after Mohini. Mohini told him, "You perform all that I do, I shall marry you." Bhasmaasura readily agreed. He had no sense of discrimination or of gratitude. Mohini started dancing and Bhasmaasura kept pace with her. In the course of the dance, Mohini placed her hand on her head. When Bhasmaasura did the same, he was reduced to ashes. His hand was his undoing.

This episode shows that even in discharging the duty of protection, the divine has to observe the code of Dharma. It should be recognized that the ways of God are governed by Shaasanam (cosmic laws). Even the Divine cannot act against these laws.

Thank You, Swami!

Dearest Swami,
Without Your grace I wouldn't be here,
Without Your blessings, I wouldn't be what I am,
I thank You from the depths of my heart.

Happy Birthday,
