Humility

"Humility is the hallmark of true education. Truth and integrity are essential qualities for students. The means to acquire these qualities is devotion to God. Without these attainments, education is a futile exercise."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~
(Divine Discourse - 20.2.1992)

Ornaments

"Truth is the ornament for the mouth.
Charity is the adornment for the hand.
Education is the ornament for the ear.
Apart from these ornaments,
what does anyone need?
A man with these ornaments can reach great heights.
He alone is a full man."

At Your Presence

When I was lost in an overcrowded city,
Upon me You have taken pity.
You awakened my soul which was exhausted
And rekindled the spirit that had once existed.

I never asked for a helping hand,
Yet You placed me upon this glorious land,
You brought tears of joy to my eyes
With my ecstasy reaching the skies.

I never thought I could be so happy,
It's all because of my Dear Swami,
Who has put an end to my plight
And placed me on the path of light.

O!  Sai Baba, there are no limits to Your grace,
Your glory echoes in diverse ways.
Our lives are sanctified in Your Presence
And mundane existence has realized its True Essence.

Baba's Storytime - Mental Transformation

Once Shuka, the son of Sage Vyasa, renouncing all attachments, left his home. Unable to endure his departure. Vyasa followed Shuka. Vyasa appealed to him: "Dear son, you should not leave your home."

Shuka told him: "You are not a father nor am I a son. Both of us are embodiments of Bliss. Because of the forms which we bear, you consider yourself as the father.and me as the son. The world consists of forms. You cannot comprehend the Divine without giving up attachment to forms. You cannot be the Seer without giving up the seen. You are carried away by your attachment to the external world."

As soon as he heard this, Vyasa experienced a mental transformation and started considering himself as an embodiment of bliss.

It is asked: "Is it possible to sacrifice (worldly things)?" The answer is: "It is not impossible if you make a determined effort." Unfortunately, man today is unable to give up addiction to even the most trivial things. Many are unable to give up cigarettes or bidis, tea or coffee. If one cannot give up such acquired tastes, how is he going to give up qualities like raaga and dwesha (attachment and hatred)?

(From the Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba)

Love

"The love which men today show towards God is filled with selfishness. The love is for the purpose of securing some desires. But love is not a commercial commodity to be got in exchange. It is offered spontaneously."

Dear Lord ...

Dear Lord,
What can we offer You?
You have given us 85 glorious years of your earthly life,
85 years of pure love and divine wisdom.
You have seen us through joy and pain,
You have protected and shielded us time and again.
How thankful we are to be living
in the presence of a loving God!

I need no worldly gift, You say,
just install Me in your heart and
let it blossom in love, that's all I ask.

Dear Lord,
Is there anything more to say?
We bow at Your lotus feet and humbly pray
that Your worthy instruments we shall
continue to be with each passing day.

Near and Dear to God

"Good company is thus most essential. Take for instance, a piece of charcoal. If it is to burn, it has to be brought close to a piece of burning charcoal. It will bum better if a fan is turned towards both. This is the result of being both "near and dear" (to the source of fire).

This applies to devotees as well. There are many who are "near" to Bhagavan. But they are like frogs in a lotus pond. The frogs are near to the lotus, but do not taste its honey. But bees come from remote distances to taste the honey in the lotus. If the frogs were aware of the sweetness of the honey, they would not have let the bees come near.

It is, therefore not enough if you are near. You have also to become dear to the Lord. You must be both near and dear. If you love the Lord, but are far from Him, you suffer the pangs of separation like a mother who is worried when she has no news from her son who is abroad. Thus both love and nearness are necessary. This is the value of having darshan of the Lord."

Sai Madhuryam

Without giving up sloth,
how can Truth be known?
Without giving up passion,
can devotion take root?
Be serene and calm,
in stress and storm,
That is the Saathwik Road
to win the Lord, the Truth.

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

Offer Your Virtues

"Offer your virtues as flowers.
Virtues that spread beauty and fragrance.
Offer your heart-lotus freed from insect pests
 like lust, anger and hate."

Divine Wisdom

I Don't Know

Bhagawan, I am ignorant about heaven or hell,
In Your Holy Presence I am fine and well.

I don't seek anyone's helping hand,
When Lord Sai was born in my own land.

I don't need any fleeting treasures of this world,
Rather I pray to speak with You, a sentence or a sweet word.

I don't want to think of my past or even future,
When Mother Sai is there to guide and nurture.

Dearest Swami, I don't want to live a life without You,
Because You loved me more than I loved You.

Quotable Quotes

“You listen not for the purpose of judging, criticizing or analyzing.
You listen only to help the other person to express himself
and find some relief from his suffering.”

Love is Spirit of Giving

Love means giving, giving and only giving without expectations like God's love, mother's love, sun's sunlight, fruits from trees, air to breath, water from the sea. What we give them? Nothing, but still they give us. This is Love. Pure love.

Love binds everybody together. In family everybody lives together just because of love. To whom we don't love we can't spend 1 minute with them because of lack of love. Friends remain friends because of love. People sacrifice their happiness just because of love. Love demands only sacrifices without expectation. The biggest example is God's love.

God gives us so many comforts. The most necessary is air to breath. Just imagine if there was no air then how long would we survive. We are here in this world for giving. By giving you will receive more and more and more. After receiving never stop giving because giving is a work we are given by God before our birth. You know what is the difference between poor and rich. Rich always give and share their comforts and poor always takes. Giving is the shortcut way of being happy, rich and satisfied.

If you want to give from your heart then you need love. Love makes the habit of giving very beautiful. Look, when you love a tree then you will water it every day, food to birds and animals, service for mankind giving your time and attention to your elders and youngsters etc. I don't know whether I am right or wrong but I feel one must love first before giving. Stop being selfish sometimes and be selfless and try to love everybody and everything. So that you can get love in return because being loved is an awesome feeling.

Baba's Storytime - God Can Come in Any Form

Once in Shirdi, Thahtya's wife prayed to Baba to visit their home and partake of food there. Baba accepted her request and promised to visit their home. She prepared everything for Baba's visit and kept everything ready. But Baba did not come at the appointed hour. She served food in the plate and went to Baba's photograph and said, "Baba why are you putting me to shame? More than my humiliation, you will be called a liar if you do not come. Why do you utter a lie? You should keep up your word!"

Meanwhile, a dog came into the house and started eating the food in the plate served for Baba. When she turned round to see what was happening, she found the dog. She got angry and beat the dog with a stick and sent it out. She was very sad that food served for God was eaten up by a dog.

Next day she went to Baba and pleaded with him, "Baba! Should you not keep your word? Why should you utter falsehood?" Baba got angry and shouted at her. "Saitan! What is the need for me to utter falsehood?" In Shirdi, Baba used the word "Saitan !" often, now Swami uses the word "Dunnapotu" (he buffalo in Telugu). Baba continued angrily, "There is no need for me to utter any lie even if it is to satisfy you. My form is Truth, but you are not able to recognise it because of your narrow thinking. You assume that Sai Baba is only this body measuring five and a half feet. All forms are Mine! You do not have such broad mindedness. You are narrowminded. The dog was none other than Myself."

God can come in any Form. All Forms are His Divinity is that which identifies itself with all the forms. It is a narrow-minded feeling to adduce Divinity to be in one physical frame and have all our acts of devotion on such an assumption. God can come in any form. All forms are His.

(From the Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba)

God's Search

"When you have full faith, God will surely help you and make you fearless. People who have faith in God will never be let down. But those who have no faith suffer. You need not search for God. It is God who is searching for a real devotee."

Dear Lord ...

Dear Lord,
How grateful I am for the gifts you have bestowed on me.
When I see a blind child, I realize how lucky I am
to be able to see You and a hundred other things.
When I see a deaf child, I realize how lucky I am
to be able to hear Your sweet voice and the
lovely bhajans I so much enjoy.

Dear Lord,
Every day is a gift from you.
Let me spend it well with a song on my lips,
gratefulness in my heart and love
for all my fellow beings!

Boy Told to Become Doctor

Once during Darshan, Baba all of a sudden asked a boy, "Are you ready to become a doctor?"  The boy was just an intermediate student at that time. He had not even written his intermediate examinations, nor had he applied for the entrance examination to join the medicine programme.

Later, when Baba was in Bangalore, He arranged admission for the boy in one of the private medical colleges, paying a huge sum as capitation fee, which even the members of the family could not have thought of. Prof. Anil Kumar asked Baba why He paid such a big sum for admitting the student in medicine.  Baba could have made him study in the best of courses in His university itself.

Baba replied, "Making the boy a doctor was the last wish of his mother.  Unable to fulfil this wish of the mother, the father was about to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff.  At that time, he heard a voice calling out to him "Don't jump!  Don't jump!"  I saved him from that tragic end and I brought him here.  I then reassured him that I will take care of them and make his son a doctor.  That is the reason why I admitted him in a medical college."

This boy is today a specialist with an excellent pratice.

Tips to Control Anger and Hatred

"You should not become a victim of the feelings of anger, hatred, ego or pride which may arise in you. When such feelings arise in you, sit silently for a few minutes. Instead of doing so, you must not give vent to your anger by scolding or beating others as you like. How to put this into practice? As soon as you get angry, you should immediately leave that place and go out into the open and quietly walk a furlong. Then your anger will disappear.

An easier method than this is to stand before a mirror and look into your own angry face. You will dislike your own face and look upon it with disgust or aversion. Then try to laugh heartily and your anger will leave you.

If you find it difficult even to do this, go into your bathroom and turn the water tap on. To the accompaniment of the tune of the sound created by the water flowing from the tap, begin to sing a good song. Then your anger will certainly disappear. Or else, drink a glass of cold water.

Like this, you have to seek ways and means of regaining a calm and peaceful mood. Instead of doing so, if you allow your anger to grow, restlessness will also grow along with that anger depriving you of peace of mind. You should never give tit for tat, or word for word."

Drill the Bore Well ...

In 1980, when the college and hostel came up at Prasanthi Nilayam, there arose the need for more water sources.  It was decided to sink one or more bore wells on the bed of the Chitravathi river.  Experts who came from Tirupati, surveyed the place and located some spots for a bore well.

When Kutumba Rao reported this to Swami, Swami came to the site and saw the location.  He picked up a pebble, threw it a long way and said, "Drill the bore well wherever the pebble lands."

An abundant quantity of sweet water was found when the bore well was sunk at that spot and the experts certified that both the quantity and the quality of the water found there was beyond their expectations!

My Life Is On Your Name

Don't know, whether I could,
Reach the coast?
But the voyage towards You
Is itself worth reliving.

Don't know, whether I could,
Move near to You?
But the moments in Your presence
Is itself worth cherishing.

Don't know, whether I could,
Touch Your feet?
But the contemplation itself
Is very realizing.

Don't know, whether You will call me or not?
But I love to be around You,
Because all this is Your game,
And my life is on Your name.

Baba's Storytime - No Gains without Pains

Only those who understand the nature of Divinity can appreciate the ways of the Divine. The Divine resorts to certain kinds of punishments to make the devotee pursue the right path and enable him to lead an ideal life. Such punishments are for the devotee's good and well-being.

Here is a story to illustrate the maxim, "No gains without pains."

There was a gardener who used to water the plants in the garden carrying a pot on his head from dawn to dusk. One day while carrying the pot he got a headache and wanted to lay down the pot and go home.

At that moment, the pot taught him a valuable lesson. The pot said: "Oh man! There can be no fruit without: labour, no pleasure without pain. Learn the lesson from my own story. I was just mere dust and mud, trodden upon by people. The potter gathered that mud, turned it into clay by pressing it under his feet, and made a pot from it by whirling the clay on his wheel. And finally I was placed in a kiln for firing. Whoever came to buy me, tapped on my sides with strength to test my hardness. It was because I went through all these ordeals that I earned the privilege of dancing on the heads of people. If I had not gone through all these trials, how could I have achieved this eminence? Likewise, only if you are prepared to go through trials and difficulties will you be able to raise yourself in life."

Hence, you should not succumb to difficulties and disappointments. You must strive to overcome them. For this purpose, you have to acquire the grace of God by developing faith.

(From the Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba)

Fruits of our Actions

"According to the purity of our actions, we will get the fruits thereof. Our precious human birth can be redeemed only by developing human qualities and leading a righteous life."

The Stepping Stones

One day, a child told his mother, ‘Mom, today is not a good day.’

His mother was surprised at his statement and instantly asked,’Why? What happened, dear?’

He said, ‘While coming home, I fell down in the staircase and got hurt on my knee.’

His mom laughed and patted him fondly,‘Oh, dear! It’s not staircase’s fault. You should be careful and minded your step.’

Again after few days, coming back from school, the boy said, ‘Mama, today is a bad day for me.’
Anxiously, his mother asked him, ‘Why so?’

The son replied, ‘Well, I wrote everything, but my teacher gave me 20 marks in history, out of fifty! I am really very upset.’

This time his mom said that he should be thankful to his teacher that she had not given 02! She nicely explained that he might not had given enough effort for the subject for which he got less mark. At the same time, she ensured him that he should focus the topics, not the marks.

The boy was surprised at his mother’s cool, gentle attitude! He assumed it other way round! He stuttered, ‘Mom! Seriously!!! You didn’t get angry?’

She smiled at her son and said, ‘Yes, honey! Why should I get angry? Marks are not the real measuring yard for the child’s knowledge! Who knows, tomorrow you might be counted as one of the most talented person in some special thing!!!’

The boy smiled and ran away for playing. The mother kept herself busy in her usual work.

Few days the boy had no complaint. Suddenly, one day he came back from the school with a frowning face. His appearance seemed very unusual. He didn’t say a word to his mom. He just went to his bed room, threw the bag on the table and sprang on the bed putting his face down on the pillow. Perhaps he was crying.

When his mother called him for having some food, he kept silent. Seeing delayed response, his mom came to him and asked the reason of his upset mood. Once again, he said, ‘Today is the worst day for me.’

Moving her fingers on his head, the mother asked him very softly, ‘What happened, darling! Why it is a bad day again? Did you fight with someone? Somebody said something bad about my son? Why are you so upset? Tell me, definitely I will solve your problem.’

Now the boy hugged his mom and grunted, ‘Mom, I had a fight with my best friend. He told me that he would not talk to me any more. I didn’t do anything wrong mama, why would he stop his friendship with me? I have no one now! I would be all alone!’

His mother clutched him very close and in a supporting voice said, ‘Oh, dear! Who said that you are all alone? I am always with you. Don’t you know that I am your best friend! Your friend is a small kid like you. He never meant to cut the relationship with you. For few days, he may continue his anger but everything would be ok. By the way, from tomorrow onwards, whenever you would see him, give him a smile. Don’t get angry. No matter what he says, don’t react. Trust me, he will change his mind.’

The boy thought for a while, then nodded his head with acceptance, then happily went away for playing! Perhaps, he was too young to understand his mother’s intellectual motive!

Well! Usually, a mother is defined universally as a kind hearted, blind folded woman towards her children forever! Nothing new about it. There are thousands of mothers, who support their children even though they are well aware of their wards' mistake! They blame others, without correcting their own child! But here, this lady was little bit different, who believed in the strong foundation of her child in right direction! She wanted to convey the message to her son that instead of pointing fingers to others, he should correct himself and be careful in every moment! Maybe, this is called ‘the stepping stone’, which would strengthen the foundation of a child to be a better man in future!! Undoubtedly, mother’s role is extremely important for the transformation of the child’s personality, and she is the one and only one person to build this stepping stone for her child although the surrounding is equally important for him!
