The Mexican Driver

In June 1985, Dr. Sara Pavan landed at Los Angeles, enroute to Canada to attend an International Conference on anaestheseology in Toronto and visit a few Sai Centres.

On 7th June, he alighted from a shuttle bus from Tom Bradley terminal to the Air Canada terminal in Los Angeles without realizing that he had left his clutch bag in the bus.  It contained his passport, air ticket and all his money.  When he realized this a little later, he was panic-stricken.  The bus had disappeared by then.  He prayed to Swami to save him form this disastrous situation, sat on the pavement and felt utterly helpless.

Within ten minutes, a white car pulled up next to him and a Mexican looking driver asked him if he was the person who had lost his passport.  When he saw his clutch bag with him, he was relieved and thanked him.  The driver handed over the clutch bag and drove him to the Air Canada terminal and drove away before Dr. Pavan had fully recovered his composure.  In that dazed state, he neglected to ask the driver who he was and how he had found him.

On 3rd December 1985, after the 60th birthday celebrations, Swami called Dr. Pavan for interview.  This time he remembered to ask Swami if He knew anything about the person who brought his passport.  Swami lunged forward from His chair and hit him on the thigh saying, "I brought it for you, because you are so careless.  I had to come back to return your things."  Dr. Pavan replied that he was tired after a long journey from Sydney, but not careless.  Swami then rebuked, "Not tired ... lazy ... lazy."
