Celebrating Vinayaka Chaturthi

Why and how should festivals like Vinayaka Chaturthi be celebrated as occasions for spiritual transformation?

"The Lord's family is an ideal one, maintaining harmony and peace in spite of the antagonistic elements present amongst them. The vehicle of Shiva (the bull), Parvati (the lion), Ganesha (the mouse) and Subrahmanya (the peacock) are, in their natural state, inimical to each other. But living in the presence of the Lord, they shed their enmity and live at peace.

Harmony in the Divine family shows that where there is divinity, there is peace and amity. Hatred and jealousy arise when the Omnipresence of the Divine is forgotten or ignored.

Holy days like Vinayaka Chaturthi should be celebrated only to remind ourselves of such sacred truths and to sanctify our minds and lives accordingly. They should not be treated as holidays for feasting and merry-making.

Ganapati should be worshipped so that all the Ganas (spirits) become friendly and helpful to us. Tyagaraja sang that if he has the daivanugraham (Lord's grace), all the grahas (planets) will be in his grasp. We must purify our hearts so that the Lord may shower His grace on us."

Vinayaka Chaturthi

14 September 2026

"What is that you have to offer to Vinayaka on this day of Vinayaka Chaturthi? Today people spend lot of money in offering various fruits to God. All these offerings are made only as a ritual. Ultimately people themselves consume them! No benefit accrues from making these offerings.

Pathram, Pushpam, Phalam and Thoyam - these are the four things that you should offer God. Here Pathram (leaf) means body. This body may wither away at any moment. So never develop attachment towards the body, instead offer it to God. Pushpam (flower} means Hridaya. This flower will never fade away. Mind can be compared to Phalam (fruit) and Thoyam stands for tears of joy. All these four should be offered to God. This is the offering that God expects."

Best Way to Observe Sri Krishna Janmashtami

What is the best way to observe the beautiful occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us on this holy day of Krishna’s advent.

"Among devotional disciplines, installing a picture or idol of the Lord in the home and adoring it, is the least valuable. The celebration of Krishna Janmashtami should not be confined to special worship and extra dishes for lunch. People do this to attract the grace of Krishna. But that grace can be won only by the observance of the teachings of Krishna. They will not be conferred on pride and pompous display.

Adoring Krishna and avoiding His teachings is a sacrilege. You can give up the adoration; nevertheless, you can earn grace if you sincerely attempt to proceed on the path He has marked out.

Krishna was the embodiment of love. Hence, love is the virtue He appreciates most. Love has to turn into concrete acts of compassion. Cultivate compassion and develop sympathetic understanding until you reach the goal of merging in the Embodiment of Love, Krishna.

There are many among you who are engaged in sadhana. What is the basic purpose of sadhana? Each exercise of the sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) is a stream that moves on to the sea of grace. Believe that the love that prompts you to serve and sympathise is a spark of the love of God."

~  Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

(Divine Discourse - August 14, 1979)

Repeat the name Krishna in your mind every moment of your life. You will find it sweeter than sugar or honey; indeed, it will taste more delicious than ambrosia. – BABA

Krishna Rama Govinda Narayana
Madhava Keshava Hari Narayana
Sri Venu Gopala Krishna
Madhava Madhusudana Narayana

Meaning:

The lord is divinely attractive and full of joy. He is the embodiment of Vedas and destroyer of ignorance. He as Krishna destroyed the wickedness of Keshi (Keshava) and Madhu. He mesmerized his comrades with soulful music from His flute. He is the ultimate destination of humanity.

Happy Ram Navami

"There is no amruta (divine ambrosia) greater than Rama's Name. Today, people have forgotten nama chinthana (contemplating the divine Name). They repeat the names of cinemas, but they don't repeat God's Name. That is why the country is facing hardships.

The educated, intellects and scientists don't think of God at all. Some people deem it below their dignity to apply vibhuti on their foreheads. They have it on their foreheads when they are at home and rub it off the moment they step outside. This has become a fashion!

Why should one be afraid of chanting God's Name? Let people talk as they like. You don't need to be afraid. Spread the glory of Rama's Name in every nook and corner of the world. You can chant any Name of your choice  -  Rama, Krishna, Govinda, Siva, etc.

Since people have forgotten the divine Name, every home is in turmoil. There are conflicts even among brothers. Since there is no purity within, unsacred feelings have crept in. People are running after money and power. Can money and power give you protection? You find so many in this world who have plenty of money and occupy positions of authority. Are they able to enjoy peace and happiness? No, no.

Only the divine Name can grant you peace and happiness. One who neglects God's Name is bound to be ruined."

Om Namah Shivaya!

15th February 2026

Visualise Shiva as the Inner Power of All

"You have given up even the little sadhana that Shivarathri demands. In olden times, people will not put even a drop of water on their tongues, this day. Now, that rigour is gone. They used to keep vigil at night, the entire night, without a wink of sleep, repeating Om Namasshivaya without intermission.

Now, the name Shiva is on no one's tongue. But, those who deny God are only denying themselves and their glory. All have Love in them, in some form or other, towards some one or other or their work or goal. That Love is God, a spark of the God in them. They have Anandha (bliss) however small or temporary and that is another spark of the Divine. They have inner peace, detachment, discrimination, sympathy, the spirit of service. These are Divine in the mirror of their minds.

Resolve, on this Holy Shivarathri, in the Presence of Shiva Sai, to visualise the Shiva as the inner power of all. With each breath, you are even now, asserting "Soham," "I am He," not only you, but, every being that breathes, every being that lives, everything that exists. It is a fact which you have ignored so long. Believe it from now on. When you watch your breath and meditate on that magnificent Truth, slowly, the I and the He (the Sah and the Aham) will draw nearer and closer, until the feeling of separateness will fade away - and the Soham will be transformed into OM, the Pranava, the Primal Sound, the Fundamental Formula for God. That OM is the Swaswaruupa - the Reality behind this "relative reality."

Jesus the Great Master

"Today is the birthday of Jesus, celebrated amidst December snow falls with lights and Christmas trees and prayers. However, it is useless to pray just one day and forget God the rest of the year. This is an empty show; it does not emanate from the heart. We are true Christians only when we live according to the teachings of Christ and practise them in daily life. Even if we follow any two teachings of His, that would be enough.

Christ said, “All life is one, my dear son! Be alike to everyone!”

If we truly follow this, it would be enough to fulfil our destiny."

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba ~

(Christmas Discourse, Prasanthi Nilayam, Sri Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 14, 25/12/1979)

Sacred Festivals

How should we observe sacred festivals like Christmas? Bhagawan gives us an important reminder on this holy Christmas Eve.

"On the 24th (Christmas Eve), people attend some worship in the church, return home to drink heavily, gorge on food and revel. This is not the significance of Christmas or the birthday of noble ones. Festivals are not for drinking and eating, but for looking into our hearts. Cleansing the heart of its dirt, reminding ourselves of the ideals of the noble one and trying to focus on at least one of those ideals is the right way to observe these festive days.

Today, man is living for desires instead of ideals. He aspires for a long life, but not for a divine life. He is not making an effort to follow the footprints of these noble ones. This is what the sadhakas (spiritual aspirants) of today have to do. Every sadhaka must aspire to be the master of the house and not merely a servant. The servant is aware only of the objects outside. But the master alone will know where in the house the valuables are secured. Since we remain as servants, we preoccupy ourselves with the names and forms in the outside world. When we become the master, we will try to recognise where within us are the precious gems of good qualities, virtues and righteousness, and also secure them.

Each one can enquire for themselves whether they are securing these precious qualities or are lost in the external, valueless and ephemeral names and forms.

Ladies' Day Message (19th November 2025)

What makes birth as a woman special? As we observe Ladies’ Day, Bhagawan clearly and firmly reminds us today.

"Embodiments of Love! In this infinite universe, among the myriads of living beings, humanity is eminent. Among human beings, it is a privilege to be born as a woman. There are many examples to demonstrate the preeminence of women. Was not Rama born as a Divine incarnation in Kausalya’s womb? Did not Lava and Kusha (the twins) become great because they were born to Sita? Was it not Jijibai’s loving care which made Shivaji great? Was it not Putlibai’s piety which made Gandhi a Mahatma?

All the greater sages and saints, heroes and warriors were born to women who made them great. Woman is the Goddess of Nature. Gayatri, which enshrines the essence of the Vedas, is a goddess, venerated as Veda Mata (the mother of the Vedas).

It is obvious that feminine birth is estimable, adorable, and sublime. The Veda also adores the feminine principle in various ways. Vedic rituals and practices accord a high place to women."

Significance of Celebrating Deepavali

What is the significance of celebrating Deepavali, the festival where we light little lamps?

"All the festivals of Bharat have an inner divine significance. In Bharat, the festivals are celebrated to prove the immanent Divinity in humanity. Deepavali also teaches a sacred inner meaning to humanity. No other element in this world is as significant as light. It is the light that shows us the way by dispelling darkness. It is because of the light that man is able to attend to his daily duties.

The flame of a lamp has two significant qualities. One is to banish darkness; the other is a continuous upward movement. Even if a lamp is kept in a pit, the flame is directed upwards. The ancients have taught that the upward movement of the flame denotes the path of wisdom and Divinity. However, the external light can dispel only the external darkness, but not the darkness of ignorance in man.

When Hanuman set Lanka ablaze, though there was light all around, Ravana’s heart was filled with darkness. Ignorance is the cause of birth and death. One with ignorance is born again and again - Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam. But the one with wisdom has neither birth nor death.

~ Sri Sathya Sai Baba

(Divine Discourse - 19.10.1998)

As we light each lamp this Deepavali, may the flame of divine wisdom awaken the light within us.  Jai Sai Ram.
