When I think about the misery
Of those in this world,
Their sadness becomes mine.
Oh, that my monk's robe
Was wide enough
To gather up all
The suffering people
In this floating world.
~ Ryokan ~
(1758 - 1831)
(Ryokan was a quiet and eccentric Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk who
lived much of his life as a hermit.
Ryōkan is remembered for his poetry
and calligraphy, which present the essence of Zen life.)
