Sathya Upanishad - Pt. 4

SADHANA

Q4  How will it be known that one has progressed in the pursuit of spiritual observations of sadhana?

A:      Several persons feel proud that they are cultivating Sadhana.  Some are proud that they perform Puja (worship of God) daily.  Some others proudly pronounce that they read the scriptures daily.  They are proud of their practices.  But what is that such a person has actually achieved?  What is the measure of the advancement?

As an example, imagine that in a see-saw balance, one end is loaded with men and the other end with God.  Man represents the six internal enemies of the humans, namely desire, anger, greed, lust, pride and jealousy or hatred.  God symbolises Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Non-violence.  Reduction of the effects of the six internal enemies results in the uplift of the spiritual level in the see-saw and man attains the advancement in the spiritual path.

Instead, if the effects of these predominate, it means lowering of the spiritual level leading to retardation in the Sadhana.  This will be the result in spite of the practices of reading scriptures or daily Puja etc.  Thus if you want to progress in the spiritual path, you should achieve the state when godly qualities become preponderant and predominate over the internal enemies of Man.  Then the God-side of the see-saw will be elevated, leading to progress in Sadhana.
